I’ll be very surprised if the decisions are not released this Friday
I really want this acceptance… the anticipation lmao
Kinda shocked no ones coming out of the woodwork to say they have “insider info” and that decisions will be posted on a certain day/time, maybes its still coming. Im praying for friday.
hey guys just joining in on the chat, i think they’re gonna be released friday too, they did that last year
What do you guys think my chances are
GPA W: 5.08 UW:4.0
SAT: 1480(680CR/800Math)
AP’s Taken:12
Class Rank: 36/604
Major: Computer Science
In State
Good EC’s
Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)
@StereotypicalEngineer: If you applied EA, then you should be hearing something this week from the only people who matter – namely, the Admissions Office. No need to ask about your chances now.
Instead of hearing all the chance me’s Ill sum this all up for you.
Instate:
27+ ACT/1150+ with good recs, good amount of Ecs, and maybe a 94/95 weighted (which is like a 3.5/3.6.
OOS:
29+ ACT(yes someone with that was accepted last year)/1380+ SAT with great recs, ECs that are in your field of interest where you were heavily involved and maybe a 98-100+ weighted (which is like a 3.85-4.0+)
Ultimately, Schools like UNC are “crapshoots” and theres no way of telling your acceptance of not. Someone with a 28 ACT can get picked over someone with a 33 ACT, theres no really “defining factor” on who is getting in. Although scores are important they ARE NOT the end of the world. You may have better ECs and Recs then the person with a higher score.
Well admissions just called us all out for freaking out on their twitter page.
@2018applicant I just saw that lol. Definitely coming out this Friday if not sooner.
Grades and scores are not the “be all end all”… but… it is also important not to under estimate their importance… along with other things such as essays, LORs etc. UNC is looking for fit… and that is portrayed through the entire application. My daughter’s friend (OOS) got in with a 29… but she had several hooks. “Lower” scores do not necessarily mean a rejection, just like higher scores do not necessarily mean an acceptance. It’s the whole package.
ECs do not have to be in your area of study… my daughters were not… but they should reflect your interests and show involvement. My daughters ECs were focused on sports, writing and government. She is a science kid.
UNC knows that students change their major … possibly several times. This was discussed at great length at orientation. They encourage you to get out of your comfort zone and explore new subjects and activities.
Good luck… you will know soon enough!
@taylorwicks: “You may have better ECs and Recs th[a]n the person with a higher score.” Correct; and you may also have other factors – such as URM status, legacy status, and first-generation college status – that militate in an applicant’s favor, which are beyond an applicant’s control but are nevertheless “considered” by UNC-CH as factors in an admissions decision (see Part C7 of the Common Data Set, here, https://oira.unc.edu/files/2017/07/cds_2016_2017_20170411.pdf). “Talent” and “character” can also help compensate for low scores, see Part C7 of the CDS.
So, while it’s not just about scores, it’s also not just about ECs and recommendations – although they are “very important” factors as well. Statistically, however, the admissions decisions favor applicants with higher test scores and GPAs, see Part C9 and Part C11 of the CDS. You almost always have statistical outliers in any population; that’s what a bell-shaped distribution curve is about.
For the fall of 2017 there were 28,008 OOS applications… and 3,785 acceptances. The majority of these acceptances had high test scores and rank/gpa. Add to this …that 92% of all students were involved in community service and 62% worked for a cause they believe in… and you get a sense of what they look for. As noted above… there will always be outliers…with " lower" scores.
It’s a stressful time… but everybody will know soon enough.
Our school has had 195 applicants over the last 3 years and Naviance shows a clear pattern. There’s a cluster of solid green (accepted) with high numbers, a cluster of solid red (denied) with low numbers, and a significant bubble between the two - maybe 20%. Within the bubble, GPA seems to count for more than SAT/ACT. Obviously it’s impossible to figure which non-numerical factor makes the difference in individual cases.
We’re a charter school in NC - each year 1/2 of our graduates apply to UNC, 1/2 of those get in, and 1/2 of those enroll. (120/60/30/15) That holds true more or less every year. We have a bunch every year who apply with dismal numbers but they take a shot.
Yo when do decisions come out?
yeah i got deferred from state as well. kinda upsetting
I heard from a friends mother who works at NCSU admissions that they would come out tonight, but they didn’t. If that says anything. Also @Johnny Turner, I got deferred too.
Heard from a couple people they are coming friday and I really hope so
Do financial aid packages (merit aid included) come out the day of decisions or do you have to wait for those? Are there separate notifications for merit aid and need-based aid?
I don’t think aid info is sent out until sometime in March at the earliest.
how hard is it to be accepted in state??
