The trends for the past few years is last Friday of January, so let’s hope tomorrow
I’m hoping that she just said that to stick with the whole “end of January” thing they’ve been going with this whole time because I’m still holding up hope for tomorrow lol. And did they say they received 45,000 applications for EA because I know 40k was was about how many applications they received overall last year (RD+EA)
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Stocking up on ice cream here!
Guidance counselor in my child’s school (we’re near CH) said it’d be Friday or Monday. This person knows someone in the admissions office.
anyone know how unc oos compares to uva oos? i’ve heard the numbers but just wondering overall because i just got deferred to uva and am feeling pretty pessimistic about unc now
My daughter rejected uva thinks she has no chance at unc. However the whole thing tends to be random and how kid a fits into the “class”they are trying to,create who knows
@emilymm1999 I believe UVA OOS is just slightly less competitive than UNC OOS, though that of course can depend on what schools you apply to within the college and any potential legacy status. I may be wrong though. Sorry to hear about UVA, but keep in mind that a deferral means that you’re at least a strong enough candidate to merit a second look, and that’s great! Best of luck to you, keep your head up
@burghdad Sorry to hear about your daughter! I wish her the best of luck with UNC – it’s impossible to tell what they’ll say, and with her stats I think she definitely has a great shot!
@emilymm1999 UNC makes 18% of it’s class OOS students. UVA is about 33% OOS students. I also got deferred at UVA but at this point there’s nothing you can do. Just sit back and hope for the best, it’ll all work out
@emilymm1999: At about this time last year, I tried to look at the then-available information on admissions to both UVA and UNC-CH. Here is what I wrote at that time:
"UVA caps OOS admissions at around 27%, whereas at UNC-CH the limit is 18% (and in fact the OOS admission rate last year was 15% at UNC-CH). So that also works in favor of [an OOS applicant] having a slightly better chance of getting into UVA than UNC-CH.
In thinking more about the UVA/UNC-CH admissions numbers, I looked at information from both the UVA website, here: http://admission.virginia.edu/admission/statistics and the UNC-CH website, here: http://admissions.unc.edu/apply/class-profile-2/. The UVA link states that “we do seek to maintain a 2/3 majority of Virginians in our student population” whereas UNC-CH seeks to have “no more than eighteen percent nonresident enrollment in the entering freshman class.” (I think I read somewhere that the entering OOS freshmen classes in the recent past at both UVA and William & Mary, another state school, have been around 27%.)
If you look at the statistics from the websites above, UVA had 9186 admitted students; if 27 % of these were OOS, that comes to 2480 OOS freshmen (if 33% of these were OOS, that number increases to 3031). By contrast, UNC-CH admitted 9386 students; if 18% of these were OOS, that comes to 1689 OOS freshmen.
If my assumptions are correct, there were almost 800 more OOS students admitted as freshmen at UVA than at UNC-CH, if 27% of incoming UVA freshmen are OOS; if 33% of incoming UVA freshmen are OOS, then the disparity increases to over 1300 more OOS freshmen admitted at UVA than at UNC-CH.
So all other things being equal, it seems that an OOS applicant has a better chance of admission to UVA because it admits a larger cohort of OOS freshmen each year compared to UNC-CH."
I have not updated the numbers since last year; but assuming that the more recent numbers of applicants as well as admitted students at both UVA and UNC-CH are roughly the same as the numbers I was using 12 months ago, then my conclusions should still hold. Of course, there may be flaws in the logic I have applied; if so, I apologize. But I think the general conclusion – that OOS applicants have a better chance of getting into UVA than UNC – still holds, because of the acceptance percentages and the overall numbers of both applicants and slots for admitted students at the respective schools. That is, of course, considering the entire population of applicants statistically; there will be individual exceptions, because the admissions process looks at individuals.
NC student who just got deferred from UVA : /// Does this say anything about my instate eligibility for UNC? Like because I got deferred from UVA I should get into UNC? What do you guys think? I had a perfect ACT score, high class rank, great essays and LOR’s, and lots of dedicated extracurriculars. Also a first gen. Gonna be honest thought I had a better shot
@jshutter444 I think being OOS for UVA is probably what hurt you, since 2/3 of their student body has to be Virginian. Since you’re in-state for UNC, I’d bet that might have better results for you.
Yeah I figured. Does anyone know how the whole “instate, OOS” thing works when they decide who to admit EA? Because if roughly 2/3 of the study body has to be Virginians, does that mean they only admit enough EA OOS students to fit 1/6 of all applicants, and then 1/6 for RD?
@jshutter444 Not entirely sure. You might have better luck over on the UVA forum, I’m sure they’d be happy to help!
does anyone know the acceptance rate for in state?
I am so nervous about decisions. Literally had a major panic attack last night.
@jshutter444 You cant compare admissions decisions across different schools and come to a logical conclusion. It could easily go the other way around where an in state student gets rejected by one school but accepted out of state into another school. In general, though, you should have better chances as an in state student. Although I wouldn’t know to what extent since I’m out of state and was accepted into UVA and a few other out of state schools. As for the 1/6 out of state EA and 1/6 out of state RD, it doesn’t necessarily have to be split half. They could take 1/12 out of state during EA and 3/12 out of state RD. It all depends on whether the students are a fit for the college, not based on “Oh we need to accept 10 more out of state to meet that 1/6 of the class”. It just turns out that on average AROUND 1/3 of all accepted are out of state. Hope that helps and good luck!
I have been really looking forward to decisions being released tomorrow but now I’m feeling doubtful because that person said they would be a day next week can they just release them already
I believe they will come out tomorrow they have always come out on a Friday the past couple of years.
I heard from a current student that he believes they will either come out tomorrow or monday. Really hoping its tomorrow!
