I just got deferred from UVA too with super high stats, leadership roles, national awards, perfect essays, everything. Feeling extremely discouraged and expecting not only a deferral from UNC, but a rejection!
@lesjubilants yo, don’t worry about them. Believe in yourself and learn to cope with these situations. Even I have been deferred from Harvard. Furthermore, I had serious doubt if I was deferred before Harvard’s results came about. Notwithstanding, I didn’t feel bad at all and that made me question my personality to a much deeper, required depth. Whatever will happen will be for good.
“Just do the work and don’t worry about result”

@lesjubilants Perhaps they are unsure how well you will fit on campus and have therefore decided to reevaluate you later. You never know what Chapel Hill will think! Maybe they are looking for a student just like you while UVA is not. Hang in there, decisions are coming soon. Besides, deferral =/= rejection, so don’t fret yet
Bro I am nervous. I got a 35 ACT and a 4.0 GPA. I am in state, but I am feeling a little less confident after my Georgia Tech deferral. My essays were also not that great. Hopefully, I will get in. Let us see.
For anyone not on Twitter:
an applicant tweeted “Congrats, you have been accepted!" @UNCAdmissions #MakeADayBetterIn5Words”
UNC responds: “The heart wants what it wants - we can’t blame you. We’re trying to do this as fast as we can, so for now, keep doing as you are and keep your appetite satisfied with creative tweets! ”
Just thought it was funny!! Hope decisions come out tomorrow so that we all can breathe easy, but I wouldn’t bank on it 100%– sounds like they are quite behind!
D was accepted OOS to UVA was deferred EA from Princeton but still nervous about UNC.
They should post tomorrow according to an inside source. Good luck to everyone.
My anxiety has manifested into persistent hiccups that started when my email came and have not stopped since. College admissions is rough on the body and soul, you guys.
Does anyone know what AS means? I checked my student center today and my B.S. program in Computer Science changed into AS. Is that a typo? I hope it means something good
@Helen5397 “AS” stands for the College of Arts and Sciences.
Thank you so much. Is it normal for my program to change from B.S. to AS?
@Bella2018 I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME OMG STRESS HICCUPS ALL WEEK.
@lesjubilants Don’t worry. You are amazing and will do great things and have a good time regardless of what happens in this decisions process.
@Bella2018 I hope you feel better! Try holding your breath
@Helen5397 Could it be that it was just always there and you never happened to notice? FWIW, mine has always said “AS”, but I’m a prospective Poli Sci major, so it could be different for a Comp Sci major.
@musicandscience OMG THANK GOODNESS I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE. Also, I wouldn’t recommend drinking a glass of water upside down. What the Internet told me would cure my hiccups instead caused me the additional discomfort of water up my nose (:
Maybe, I applied B.S. in common app, so I am kind of confused here. Thanks for clarifying!
For NC students, I do think that UNC’s admission process is truly more holistic than UVA’s. I think that a lot of that has to do with the fact that we’re OOS. Having known many current and previous UNC students, UNC admits aren’t always the most statistically qualified. That’s not to say that there aren’t plenty of extremely statistically qualified students, and also not to say that these people are any less qualified to participate and excel in the classroom. I just think that UNC is truly looking for aspiring learners and those who can show their qualification through aspects of their life other than school.
Also, I wanted to mention that after talking to UNC admissions officers, the writing is a really important tool for them to see how well you write. Yes it is about getting to know you better, but it has a lot to do with the quality of your writing–something you will need to have developed in order to succeed at Carolina…
@Helen5397 Yeah, of course! Happy to help. I have a friend who applied for either a Comp Sci or Math degree at UNC regular decision, so I’ll ask him what it looks like on his portal. But I’m relatively confident that it just shows up as “AS” for everyone on ConnectCarolina.
Okay. hope all goes well for us!
AHAHAHA I’ll keep that in mind @Bella2018
To the general public: If the writing is a huge part of it then does anyone think a poor ACT essay score could be my downfall? I’m a first gen URM from NYC so OOS, I have good essays, an unweighted 97/100 on the highest course of study available to me, good ECs, good LOR, and a 34 ACT… BUT a 7/12 on the essay portion of the ACT :((
Now I’m getting nervous it’s not tomorrow but rather Monday… did anyone read UNC Admissions’ latest tweet?
