Oh that makes sense! @chiirp
Deferred OOS. 34 ACT, 1450 SAT, really good volunteer opportunities (200+ hours) EC activities for 13 yers, multiple awards in those ECs. In every honor society, the IB program, and a 5.39/4.0 GPA. Anyone else feel like this was the only school that mattered? Devastated. Also deferred to UVA.
Drove to Chapel Hill today took pictures in front of the Old Well, bought swag at student stores, had dinner on Frankin Street, saw a party at big frat court, and found the new Target in front of Granville. The weather was perfect. I think she is excited. Per Waze 13 miles from my office and 30 miles from home.
@Mickey2Dad When it comes to competitive public institutions and OOS there are multiple reasons why someone gets defered from one and not the other schools as my D got it o Chapel Hill But was defered by Michigan. Some other posters mentioned similar situation accepted in UVA but not the other two.
So definitely did research today and from 2013 778 kids from OOS were deferred, ultimately 61 were offered admission, compared to 974 kids IS and 290 offered admission. The rates are significantly different, and it is much harder to get in OOS and deferred. Being deferred, I’m no longer setting my heart on getting in, I was happy to be deferred for being pretty average (and legacy). To the other deferred applicants I would have a back up plan for sure, I know it’s disappointing, we can always transfer later.
Does anyone know when we will find out if we are Carolina Covenants, merits scholarships we’ve won or financial aid packages?
FA packages typically come out around March
From the FAQ for students offered admission
“Am I being considered for any special opportunities such as merit scholarships or Honors Carolina?
All students who were offered admission were considered for Honors Carolina and other special opportunities. Students who have been selected for one of these programs will be notified during the next several weeks.”
I was deferred OOS. I sent an update with additional information that better details my interests and extracurriculars. Not hoping too much for an acceptance because I did submit my application very hastily (on the deadline lmao). Good luck to all those deferred and congrats to those accepted.
Daughter’s only rejection so far UNC. OOS 3.96 GPA unweighted and 31 ACT. Her two reach schools were UNC and Duke. Looking at the posts for OOS rejection in retrospect UNC might even be more of a reach. I would think there might be some OOS applicants rejected by UNC that end up at Ivy or equally ranked schools.
Where can I find the admissions rep for NY? I can’t find it anywhere. Want to send my LOCI asap.
For all those applicants who were deferred or denied, I recommend that you read this article, which I have found can help put things into perspective: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/15/opinion/sunday/frank-bruni-how-to-survive-the-college-admissions-madness.html?rref=collection/column/frank-bruni&_r=0 . This is excerpted from Frank Bruni’s book titled “Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be” — which says it all, in my opinion.
Did anyone else get an email about Honors Carolina?
@Jazz239 I did as well, crossing my fingers that an email from the scholars program follows this but as an OOS applicant I know my chances are slim to none for merit scholarships
We didn’t get any email yet for honors. What does that mean? Possibly rejected? Also how much honors helps for premed track? Just wondering if that should be part of our decision criteria when deciding between colleges. My daughter is oos and may or may not get any financial aid. She wouldn’t qualify for need based.
Do you think emails are staggered? Also, if I didn’t get Honors Carolina do you think this means I have a better chance at one of my other excel@carolina opportunities (both of which I care about a little more)?
My daughter just got Honors Carolina email!
Just got into Honors Carolina!
We never did get the email earlier in the week about emails not coming out on Wednesday or thursday. My son did get accepted on Friday. Still no email, just in his portal. Does/will the acceptance into Honors show up in the portal?
@ParentOf2022 Mine was a direct email, should show up that way
