Shoot. Portal we know we can check. The email…we don’t know why we never recieved Wednesdays. Makes us worry, others won’t come through.
@ParentOf2022 My D’s Honors email was in the spam folder.
We kept checking his spam for wednesdays email, it just never showed up. Last email from UNC was a season greetings in December.
@2018applicantmom: If you are not offered Honors Carolina as an incoming first-year student, you can still apply after matriculation while still a first-year student: http://honorscarolina.wpengine.com/academics/join-honors-carolina/.
I don’t know that Honors Carolina would help that much for pre-med track; when I met with the Honors Carolina coordinator, it primarily seemed to have some advantages regarding career counseling and networking opportunities (as best I can recall), which were nice. Others may have a different opinion. But I wouldn’t make the failure to get in to Honors Carolina at the time of the admissions offer a reason to turn down UNC-CH in favor of another school.
Also, don’t hold your breath about getting significant (if any) merit aid.
Can anyone that recieved an email for Honors college, be willing to see if it’s also shown in their connect carolina portal? I know we won’t get anything if he’s not accepted in, but not real confident that an email would come through, based on Wednesdays experience.
&
No one got an email for UNC acceptance, right? That’s only shown in our portal?
@ParentOf2022 - I will ask my daughter to check when she gets home. I don’t have access to her portal. Also, if you don’t get it, you can request “reconsideration” in March or April, I believe, or, as the other poster said, apply in Jan. of Freshman year.
Honors Carolina! Is that the only excel@carolina program that has notified admission yet? Also, are there any current students who may know when merit aid notifications are sent?
@AlmostThere2018 thank-you! I know that he can apply for reconsideration. Mostly just concerned about the possibility of being accepted, but not getting the notification…for now
On what basis are the selections made?
Daughter’s stats;
Unw; 3.97, weighted after midterm:4.55, after junior year:4.45. Sat:1560
@2018applicantmom - the website says no GPA / scores formula – more holistic.
My daughter has great stats (including NMSF, 4.0 uw GPA) but I think perhaps she was invited because she has put in extra effort across many different disciplines. She’s not a pointy kid, in admissions parlance, but rather more of a standout “well-rounded” applicant which I think is perhaps why she was selected??
[[Details if interested: She overloaded her course load since Junior year by taking extra online classes through the state’s science & math program for gifted kids – beyond a full load at her home ( highly regarded) high school. Yet while she’s def. a STEM gal, she also had perfect ACT scores on reading and English, won a national Spanish award, several Model UN awards, editor of her school newspaper and captain of a sports team (tho not a standout). Her teacher rec shared that fact that he emphasized her passion for learning – not grades – in his letter.]]
I know students at UNC who say not being selected for the program is not a reason to not attend. There are so many talented students at UNC across the board!! Good luck!!
@AlmostThere2018 Is there actually a reconsideration period?
@Almostthere2018 - congrats for your daughter. I am sure there are lots of great kids. Still UNC is one of our top choices, so let’s see how things go.
@lesjubilants – from the website:
I am guessing some students invited end up at other colleges so that opens up spots, so that’s why they reconsider some folks in April.
What if I didn’t receive an invitation?
If you did not receive an invitation to join Honors Carolina and you’re planning to enroll at UNC as a first year student in the fall, you have two options:
Send an email to honorscarolina@unc.edu with the subject line, “Reconsideration Request”. Our deans will review your application one final time to determine if we can extend an invitation to you. The deadline to submit a reconsideration request is 12:00 noon EST on Thursday, April 5 2018.
Or
Apply to Honors Carolina after completing one semester.
From the Honors Carolina website:
“Every student who is accepted for admission to Carolina is automatically considered for Honors Carolina. Students who are invited to join Honors Carolina typically receive an invitation within two weeks of being admitted to the University. Members of the Class of 2022 who do not receive an invitation from us within two weeks of admission to the University are invited to submit a Reconsideration Request no later than 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, April 8.”
So if you haven’t gotten an email yet, there’s still a chance that-
(1) you’ll be sent one in the next two weeks or
(2) you’ll get in after sending a Reconsideration Request.
Do not let not receiving the Honors College deter you from going to UNC. My son did not get honors in 2015 and we thought he should have received it. He did decide to go to UNC and is currently a junior. We are so glad he did not do honors. The regular classes are extremely hard all around. He had straight A’s in high school and that all changed. His major is Computer Science BS and very hard classes. UNC is a wonderful school with honor classes or regular classes.
My daughter is also a junior (OOS) and did not make honors as a freshman. She could have applied but honestly did not see the need to. She does very well academically… works hard for it, and is involved in so much… including research… volunteering… clubs… that honors really is not all that important to her. Not making honors is not a reason to turn down such a great school.
Ok, that’s good to know. Does not getting invited to honors today completely put me out of the running for merit aid? I know it was a long shot anyway but I really want to be able to afford UNC
Merit aid is not easy to come by OOS… I would call the FA office and explain your situation.
Thank you @Nurse001 and @twogirls for your recommendation to not let a lack of Honors invitation be the deciding factor about attending UNC. Good to hear that the regular classes are rigorous and research is still a possibility without honors.
Has anyone from OOS received an invitation to Honors Carolina today?
@appalachymom Yes I received an invitation to honors carolina and I’m OOS from VA
