(This isn't for me - this is for someone I know that is interested in transferring).

I know someone that is currently interested in transferring to UNC as a junior. By the time they would enroll in UNC, they would have an Associate's degree from a local community college in NJ.

Throughout high school, his grades were not stellar due to being on homebound for almost 2 years (medical problems combined with non-helpful teachers), and working 30+ hours a week to support himself. (He is in a family with 6 children - all living at home).

In college, he has made the Dean's List every semester, and has taken up to 19 credits in one semester (6 college classes), in addition to working 38 hours per week as a CSR at a bank. He should graduate with ~3.7 GPA. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa (I think I got the name right) Honor Society for community college students, and is a first-generation college student. He's a highly motivated student, despite his issues in high school.

He has been working since he was 14, and has done limited volunteer/ECs due to his medical problems (back issues that resulted in him being in a back brace for almost 2 years), and legal issues involving his back, combined with little time to do anything because of his work hours.

He's interested in pursuing things in the pre-med/bio field.

What are his chances, theoretically speaking? He's also OOS, even though I know UNC claims to not take state residency into consideration for transfers.
