UNC vs. UGA Honors

We qualified for zero financial aid. It will cost $40k/year to attend UNC at Chapel Hill. It will cost $10k/year to attend Honors at UGA. Prestige and great education, future opportunities important. We can swing it but what is the best choice?

UGA is a very good school, and its honors program is well developed. Assuming your academic interests coincide with the introductory honors classes offered at UGA, I’d go there. I don’t believe UNC is worth $30k a year more than UGA, especially when you factor in the perks of the honors college.

Within Georgia, UGA is very well regarded, and the school offers a great deal of opportunities for academic and professional development.

Disagree with everything said above except the 30k part. UNC is way way ahead of University of Georgia in everything. I would pay around 15k more for UNC but 30k per year is just too much. You are forced to attend UGA. Why didn’t you apply to Georgia Tech ?

UGA is one of the better state flagships. Because of HOPE, UGA attracts many top Georgia students who didn’t want to pursue engineering or business (although their b-school is well connected to Georgia businesses), and many of those top students go on to the honors college. I’ve worked with UGA students on an ecological reclamation project and was extremely impressed with their level of professionalism and skills. They put Emory and Oxford students to shame.

Also the average student at UGA was a very good student in high school. Because of HOPE, most people enrolled in quite a few APs, got good grades, etc. UGA also attempts to connect itself with relevant employers (I’m only familiar with the ecology and forestry students, but was assured this was the case across most disciplines by a number of UGA students on separate occasions).

Unless if your family is quite wealthy, UGa is probably the better choice.

Reply to XtremePower: She did, This is her deal: UGA Honors $10k/yr, GA Tech Honors $14k/yr, UNC $45k/yr, Washington & Lee $60k/yr. She and her parents don’t have a clue what is best. We’ve visited, see pros and cons at all, could probably be happy at all. Seeking more input- pretty much undecided major- not keen on engineering but maybe leaning toward business, pre-med-her abilities are well-rounded. She’s wait listed at 4 other awesome schools.

I would go with georgia tech, its one if the best public schools in the country. UNC doesn’t really have that much of a better reputation, if any better

GT with honors for only 14k ? That’s something in life you absolutely do not want to pass up. Their business school is very highly regarded and i don’t have to tell you about engineering. It definitely is the best in your list.

I would go with Tech because they have a really good business school, and also, from what I’ve heard, the students in UGA Honors are really competitive (I’m not sure about the extent of it and what it’s for, in terms of it competitiveness)

Another vote for Georgia Tech.
