UNC wait list offer/financial aid

I recently just got off the wait list as an out of state student and was wondering if UNC gives good financial aid. My parents income bracket is around 200k and I really don’t think I could afford to even think go to UNC unless it cost the same or less than UVA(where I had planned to go). I am intrigued by UNCs journalism school and had planned to study commerce at UVA. I was wondering whether UNC had a good reputation with financial aid.
I do however feel extremely blessed to have gotten off the wait list as only 50 out of state students were able to do so. Also I haven’t even submitted the CSS part of the financial aid to UNC so I don’t think that’s good. I never really planned on going here but I just want to get UNC affordable enough where I can make a decision on where I want to go not based on money but the actual school itself.

I know that UNC meets full need for in state student and maybe for OOS. However, UNC require the CSS Profile to determine what your need is according to their formula. They will look at income and assets. What amount of aid do you need? If you are in state for UVA, I would be surprise if the FA would be great enough to eliminate the OOS premium.

Overall, UNC is generous if you have need. With an income of 200K, I would not expect much unless there are other factors.

Ok thanks bud

A $200,000 family income will not likely get you much if any need based aid.

Okay thank you

UNC meets full need for OOS students. Although they use the CSS profile along with the FAFSA, they use the FAFSA EFC. A $200,000 salary will probably get you some aid if there are two kids in college.

I would expect your costs to be greater than your FASFA EFC unless you have something unique such as extremely high medical bills.

Got my aid package today. 15k in grants and 8k in federally subsidized loans plus a laptop grant. How is this possible?! Is it possible for them to take away or change my aid after I accepted the offer. Like I said my parents make close to 200k but I do have a sibling in college not sure how much that helps.

If you have filed the CSS and FAFSA with the correct numbers (based on your 2014 tax returns) then your package for this year should be solid.

If you are a freshman, then your 8K in federal subsidize loans implies that you got a Perkins loan. Doesn’t make sense if your parent’s income is 200K+. Neither does the laptop grant. It is possible they made a mistake but they should honor it.

Having a sibling in college does help. Your aid will decrease once that sibling graduates.

Wallstar2 I sent you a PM.

UVA and UNC basically cost the same now for me now it’s just a matter of which school is a better fit thank you guys
