UNCSA Drama

Any current students at UNCSA for acting who can tell me more about the program, and/or specifically what it’s like with the new dean? Thanks!

Hi there. I am a current drama student at UNCSA. The new dean is lovely. He’s giving the students more opportunities to create their own work and produce shows for the public. He is also very invested in the business side of this art. He brings in guest agents/managers. He really shows off this school to ensure that the graduating class will get the opportunity to work. He’s really on top of it. He founded and ran an off broadway theater company (Keen Company, still exists today) prior to working here, so he really knows what the business is looking for.
On the flip side, our teachers here are really focused on creating art, so the combination of the faculty and the new dean is really beneficial to the students here. We learn both artistic freedom and how to work in this business.

Hi interestinglamp, my daughter is a freshman working on her acting BFA from UNCSA. She loves UNCSA, as does pretty much everyone, if not everyone, in her year. She says the training is top notch and all-engrossing. She is busy almost every minute of the day, which she thrives on. She loves all the professors, and is just bowled away by the quality of the training. I wish I could answer your questions more specifically, but, in general, UNCSA is fantastic for theater, and completely deserves its top notch reputation. Hope you become a Pickle too!

When did most of the students from UNCSA DRAMA started acting? And do you have to be a great actor to get in?

My daughter will start there in the fall. She started acting in elementary school and some local kids theater programs. Got more serious about it in middle and high school. I think they look for talent and potential - not just how long you have been doing it. That said, it does seem many of the kids have experience via high school or another college if transferring and a few have professional experience.
