I have a daughter at UNCSA. I’m willing to answer any questions about the program in the forum or privately.
@2lights – which program is your daughter in?
BFA Acting
Thanks, @2lights – my D is interested in School of Design & Production programs.
Great school. My D has many friends in the program who are very happy.
@2lights – she agrees and has several friends in D&P. She also has friends at other schools who are very happy, and is still facing the BA vs BFA decision.
@2lights, do you know if Acting majors can also take advanced dance classes? Several college students at other schools said they know people who do both at UNCSA but the rep we met at a college fair said the head of both programs would have to approve it and sounded like it was unlikely that they would.
Not 100% sure as my daughter is only a freshman but the dance teacher in their program is very strong. Usually the reps at college fairs don’t know specifics like that. The person to ask through e mails is Quin Gordon.
Thanks for the feedback, @2lights.
@dramamama2022 my D is also a student there in drama. Some drama kids audit advanced dance in the dance conservatory when they have time. Time is the key as they are in class all day every day.
The drama students do take dance and voice each semester as part of their curriculum. We had to buy all the dance clothes and shoes as part of the “supply” list. It is a very physical program.
@bfahopeful D just got her UNSCA audition slot and is very excited!!
I’m hearing they had between a 40- 50% increase in applications this year for acting. They have a new dean, Scott Zigler who will only take the program to greater heights.
How long after her audition was she accepted?
I believe my daughter auditioned at the Chicago unified auditions and was called on a Sunday, either March 19th or 26th.
Yay @artskids! I am eager to hear your impressions as you have one at Purchase and they are both intense programs. My D and the other kids we have met seem to love it. I’m rooting for her! (And really all auditioning. I’m a big fan of UNCSA).
As for when they make decisions -my D got a couple calls. I think one was in mid feb about her interest and then the official call came in late feb or early March (it actually came while she was at Guthrie for callbacks—so whenever that was).
I also know some kids got rejection letters fairly early (mid feb) but others not until March. Maybe they stagger it? Not really sure.
I think once the last audition is over the decisions are made pretty quick though.
And “wow” if they really had a 40-50% increase in applicants. The current students do really like the new dean by the way. He came from Harvard and has some very cool ideas.
Do the drama students take dance every day? My acting child really does not like dance…
@KarenK99 Yes they take dance everyday and a very intensive "movement’ class, it is a very physical program, they are sweating everyday.
@KarenK99 I asked my daughter and she said that in year 1 and 2 they have a dedicated dance class twice a week, plus 2 stage combat classes and 2 mask/movement classes each week. So a total of 6 physical classes a week (separate from other drama classes). My D also said in year 3 they have dance one day a week vs two. (I think each year there are minor tweaks to the overall schedule, but it is a physical program in general…especially around stage combat and mask class. And as @teatromama said - they sweat -a lot!).
Thanks for the info on UNCSA @bfahopeful!
My S is very interested in UNCSA. We had a great visit there this past summer. He is auditioning in Chicago.
