UNCW vs App state

so I’m looking at UNCW and app state for college but I can’t decide which one would be better for me. I looked into other colleges but after visiting these were my 2 favorites.

UNCW pros: I have family here, flat campus, I prefer apartments here, more grocery stores
cons: long bus ride home(no car), hurricanes, gender ratio(which is the biggest con for me)

app state pros: college town, shuttle home, hiking, could have fresh start because of no family
cons: fewer grocery stores, not huge fan of apartments here, and it can get really cold

I have no preference over mountains or beach or warm or cold weather, and I also don’t really care about sports. I would love to hear about other people’s experiences at these schools especially in computer science

Both are really good schools (two of the best in the UNC system) and all the students I know that go to each, really love their school. Don’t know much about eithers CS program, so I assume you feel they are equal. That said, the decision is in your last paragraph. I like the beach, but love the mountains so all being equal I would choose App.

Dig deeper into finding a preference. And yes App can be really cold, Wilmington can be very hot. Which can you stand better? From what I found. the gender ratio between the two is not that different 55%(App) to 60%(UNCW) women. If you want a school with more men than women, you’ll need to go to NCSU.

Maybe do another visit to each at another time of year.

Best of luck.

I am struck by your comment about the grocery stores. Yes, this can be a serious “fit” issue for some students. When Happykid was looking at grad schools last year, one of the columns in her spreadsheet was for supermarkets. Only institutions with Aldi, Trader Joe’s, and at least one Korean/Chinese/Asian supermarket within 40 minutes of campus made her application list. The apartment hunting trip last summer included stops at 10 (yes TEN!!) different supermarkets in her new university town, and she has discovered many more since moving there. Her advice for you would be that rather than looking just at the number of grocery stores, look at what those places actually have for sale. Do they carry the items that you are interested in? If they don’t, how challenging would it be for you to get those items? Could you simply do a major stock-up when you are home on break, or order some items for delivery?

I can see why you are torn- both are great. Have you looked at the actual course offerings for the major you are interested in? I could be wrong, but I remember APPs Gen Ed to be a little confusing and more intense. My D has friends there and they comment that the Gen Ed requirements are weird, but they love it there. Maybe that will help you decide.

doesn’t app state have some engineering? if so that usually means stronger CS, but I don’t know that for this particular school
