I do not have a major in mind.

Yet I have to choose which academic school and write an essay on why I want to enter that particular academic school.

I'm thinking about choosing the humanities school at Rice, but will I get rejected for come across as non-serious?

What interests you the most right now? Do you have any sort of gut feeling? If so, go with that. And use your short answer to explain that you are really undecided but are leaning towards School of ABC because of XYZ. If you are accepted, you can major in any academic school (except architecture or music…you need to apply directly to those schools or reapply to switch to them). The school of choice is just to provide some perspective for your application. For example, if you designate engineering, they’ll look for math and science courses and activities. That wouldn’t be crucial for a humanities major to have though. Does that make sense?
