So right now I'm finding it difficult to decide between majoring in two of these three: Math, Science, Engineering.

I want to apply to Michigan but I understand there are multiple different schools within the university. I've heard that the school of engineering is a very difficult one to get into, and that if I put on my application that I want to major in engineering then I have a less chance of being accepted than if I apply for the LS&A school. Is this true?? I'm very confused about that whole system of admissions when it comes to the schools in U of M...

Also, what school is the department of math in??

The math department is in LSA. Don’t worry about which school is harder to get into. Just apply where you think you would fit the best. COE isn’t necessarily harder to get into. LSA and COE just look at different criteria. You would be a good candidate for COE if you have taken advanced math and science classes and have high SAT/ACT scores in math and science.

Engineering is not harder to get into. That is a misconception due to the fact that many students are not comfortable with the sciences. The main difference is that given the academic nature of engineering, successful applicants must demonstrate a certain dexterity with all things quantitative. As in AP Calculus and AP Physics or AP Chemistry is generally expected, as is a SAT Math score over 700. LSA expects students to be very well-rounded academically, but demonstrated strength in Mathematics and the Sciences is not required or expected. If you are taking a bunch of APs in Mathematics and the Sciences, you will not find it harder to get into the CoE than into LSA.
