Any thoughts on NCState vs App for undecided (probably biz) but def non-STEM? GPA and SAT are above our school’s average of accepted students (157) over the last 3 years at State, and APP is.a safety.
Mom of both an Appalachian State student and a NCSU student. My DS at App started as undecided and is now a business major (junior). If you’re not sure of your major I would choose Appalachian. NCSU is definitely a tech school and most things hinge on the college you are in (orientation dates, etc). At State you only get one year before you have to declare a major. There is a very formal process for changing majors even if you change as a freshman.
At Appalachian as at most liberal arts schools you have 2 full years before you declare a major. My DS classes have been much smaller at App than my DD at NCSU. He is in the honors college which gets him many extras including the nicest dorm in the best location, extra counseling, special classes and just a group of like minded friends. Since Appalachian is a masters level institution more emphasis is put on teaching undergraduates than at research doctoral universities like State. You’re more likely to get more merit money too.
Please don’t worry about not knowing a major right now. I think it’s smart to go in undecided rather than picking something randomly and then changing which is what many students do. Get on campus, take some classes and it will fall into place. It did for my DS.
Also if you are serious about business and looking at NC system schools look at UNC Charlotte. Charlotte is such a business center the internship opportunities would be top notch.
