Undecided vs. Specific Major

Hello all,

So I plan on applying for a lot of the UCs for their Fall 2016 admissions, and recently, I’ve been thinking about my major.

So I plan on majoring in a certain Biological Science, possibly Biomedical Engineering, and it’s occurred to me that a lot of these majors are impacted. So, this of course may lower my chances of acceptance to that school. I want to maximize my chances at these schools, so would it be better to apply as “Undecided”?

Also, how difficult is it to transfer as an “Undecided” student to the major of your liking (the ones stated above); does this difficulty possibly balance out choosing an impacted major vs. choosing undecided?

Thanks to any and all who respond and clarify.

Really looking to go to UC Davis or UCSD, view my other posts if you want to see my stats (They both school’s medians).

At Davis, as far as switching goes most majors just require a couple advisers’ signatures after you’ve been here at least one quarter. For impacted majors, you need to fulfill certain prerequisites and then can get the signatures and change your major.

Biomedical engineering is impacted, as are all other engineering majors here. http://bme.ucdavis.edu/undergrad/advising/change-of-major/

I’m not sure about the biological sciences major. I can’t find anything that says there are prerequisites to switching, but you would need to talk to an adviser once you’re here to make sure.
