Did all you other undeclared people get this email from the engineering department:

"Let me personally congratulate you on your admission to UC San Diego. As an undeclared major with outstanding high school math achievements, I would like you to consider the Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering department majors that are available to you at the Jacobs School of Engineering.

You and your family are invited to join us and learn more about these majors at Freshman Admit Day on Saturday, April 14, 2007. This is an excellent opportunity for you to get the information you need to make your acceptance decision. Our faculty will present overviews of our engineering majors, and students, faculty and staff will be on hand to answer all your questions about what makes the Jacobs School the right choice for you. Engineering presentation overview details are as follows:

ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING INFORMATION SESSION

Well, if you have any possible interest whatsoever in those majors, I would absolutely take the opportunity. Those majors are impacted at UCSD, and the fact that they're practically inviting you in means they'll probably let you switch into those majors if you want. The reason this is good is because after this, there will probably be little to no opportunity for you to get into those majors (because they're impacted).

In other words, if you accept their offer, you can very easily switch out if you change your mind; but if you don't accept their offer, and later you decide that maybe you want to enter those majors, then you might be out of luck.

Actually, neither is, because those are not majors, they are departments. Each department offers several different majors. :P But yes Computer Science is impacted, while Electrical Engineering is not. I'm not sure about Computer Engineering or the others.

I would most certainly take them up on their offer. Once here, it is nearly impossible to transfer INTO the impacted majors, especially those in the engineering school. Go and ask them if that email means you have some kind of special foot in the door if you do want to declare for CSE or ECE.

Keep in mind: many people love computers, but can't stand them when it comes to programming. I know more than a few people who have left the major after deciding that reading line after line of Java code just wasn't for them. But if you're really interested, best of luck!
