I already have a joint-savings Wachovia account. When I called the Reitz Union financial center, I was told that since I have a joint-savings, they may be able to do something for me thought I'm under 18.

So I guess my question is: will I still be able to link my Gator1 card to Wachovia and access the ATM's?

My roommate was 17 when she started at UF and had no problem getting a student checking account at Wachovia. I think she might have had one of her parents on the account too, but I’m not sure. That’s usually the way to get around age requirements at a bank.

She never linked her Gator1 card to her account, but she certainly had the option. Honestly, that’s not that big of a deal. It’s really just the same as using a debit card, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

I opened a student checking account with Wachovia when I was 17. Shouldn’t be a problem to get your own.

to be honest, i wouldn’t use wachovia for checking. i opened an account before freshmen year, but no longer use it. the ATMs on campus aren’t as convenient as you might think and in my opinion wachovia’s customer service is pretty bad.

campus usa, a credit union which allows UF students to open accounts, is pretty good.

that being said, if you will not have access to a car, then i’d probably go with wachovia, since the only other on-campus ATM is compass bank.
