Under Represented Minorities!!!

Hey does anyone know what the average SAT or ACT scores were for URM applicants for harvard, yale, princeton, or duke that got ACCEPTED??? How many were accepted with at or lower than 1450?? How about at or lower than 1350?? What is a good ACT score for a URM with a 1/581 rank and 13 APs??

Its never listed, but it shouldn't be that high. In 2003, only 72 blacks scored 1500 or above, 192 blacks above 1450, and 1,877 blacks above 1300. About 10% of Harvard's class is usually black, so that is around 200 kids. Of course every person with an SAT score above 1450 isnt going to get accepted or enroll, so there's definitely a large amount of Harvard students with SAT scores in the 1300s. What did you get? I'm sure its in the range given your great class rank.

I got a 1500/2270 in May, but my class rank is only like 6/485 and my school doesn't offer any APs, so I guess it balances out.
I know you didnt say which URM you were, but I'm sure the numbers are similar for all.

lol, apfreak, you really need to chill out. :) Why don't you hold yourself to the standards that the schools release?

it was merely an inquiry...i have a coupel examples i was rejected rd from harvard with a 1360 n i'm black, i know a girl waitlisted adn eventually rejected with a 1470 who is black, one of my friends was accepted with a 1320 who is black and was the valedictorian of a poor public school...my cousin, a female ranked 2nd in her class and a 1530 SAT was rejected from harvard/yale/duke but accepted at every other ivey and stanford, a friend i met at duke was rejected at harvard yale but accepted at princeton with a 1410 he was black...as you can see there is no pattern here however i would assume that in general a URM scoring over 1400 1,2,3 rank 700+ ave SAT 2's and good extracurrics would have a really really strong chance at being accepted to hyps...i was accepted at duke and the blacks that i talked 2 hung with had SATs ranging from 1300-1550 with the mean i would say being 1350-1400

I am black and I was rejected from Harvard with a 32 ACT but accepted at Yale and Stanford. My friends with 1450 and 1500 that I met at various weekends were rejected from HYPS. These high scores mean nothing if you cant back it up with activities and great essays. Even than its a crap shoot, even for URM's. Just like Mine is Different, I went to the Duke minority weekend which had some of the most talented blacks in the country. Most of them were rejected from HYPS despite their high scores and other achievements.

Agreed. Personally, since Harvard's applicant pool is so strong they can do whatever they want. From my limited experience as a rising senior, it seems that Harvard accepts students with unique, quirky, or amazing ecs or circumstances but average SATs (1350-1450) over the prototypical genius (1550-1600) at a higher rate than the rest of the ivies.

I'm sorry that this might seem like a question with a very obvious answer, but what exactly are the URMs? Everyone who's not a Caucasian male?

A URM is generally any person of color, excluding internationals and, for many of the top colleges, Asians.

emperor550, I think it's very interesting that based on our skewed perspectives, a 1350 is average, when in fact a 1350 puts a person in the 93rd percentile (and a 1450 the 98th percentile). I suppose we've had too much exposure to the stats of people here on CC. :)

Haha, yeah that same exact thought popped into my head as I was writing my last post. But we are on the Harvard board!

I don't think Asians are... considering they're overrepresented. Make up 4% of the population, and 20% of admitted students.

1350 is not nearly average and is a commendable score...however you have to remember that nationwide over 150,000 kids score over 1350...when 20,000 students apply to harvard and only 9% are accepted you can see why most people look down on score that is less than 1500

Asians are overrepresented at the top colleges, but for many of the less competitive colleges, as well as many LACs, Asians are underrepresented, i.e., URMs, and hence are desirable.
