Underage drinking in frats and sorities?

In other news, Barack Obama is the president, the sun rose today, and Cornell is a college.

much inulgence is not good. I never understood why some ppl want to drink and have sex so much

I dont like alcohol, accidentally drank a little in childhood,

haven't drank any since 2nd grade

Yea I never understood and probably never will understand binge drinking. I'm well aware that alcohol induces the release of certain brain chemicals that we interpret as satisfaction, pleasure, happiness, etc. Thus, a little imbibing sure is logical given the positive results that occur. (People do drugs because it makes them feel good. Many can't grasp this concept.)

But what exactly is the point of binge drinking, independent of doing so due to alcoholism? Most likely the individual will have serious after effects including a severe hangover and surely memory loss. Additionally, I'm sure the pleasure derived from alcohol consumption does not follow a linear trajectory. It tapers off.

For me, it's a just one of those conundrums, like religious belief and far left liberalism, that I'll probably never understand.

I can't think of any particular reason why binge drinking would be enjoyable. Yet it still is. Some things just can't be explained.

dontno, do you have stressful job?

I don't really get the point of binge drinking, although the idea of beer pong attracts me for some reason. I love my liver too much though.

this is an embarassing thread.
underage drinkings happens in high school, even middle school... why wouldn't it happen in college? lol. and the fact that cornell is ivy league changes nothing. they're just smarter than the people at san fernando valley community college, not (necessarily) nerdier.
a hefty majority of people are going to drink underage
hell, a majority might even be having a solid amount of sex
there must be something fun about these two things if so many ppl are into them?

Sex? Alcohol? FUN? I'd rather be eating donuts.

No and I don't think that would justify BINGE drinking. Does that justify getting buzzed? Sure. (Though I believe the seeking of pleasure shouldGENERALLY be as a result of achievement or productive work, not as a means to escape from reality. For example, someone should surely go out on a given weekend if they had performed well on two prelims that week, not if they had merely taken the prelims.)

But I digress. So you're basically saying that a logical thought process would be as follows. "My life is hard. So now I'm going to forget all about it!"

Read Brave New World. Maybe you should start taking "soma". Life is to be enjoyed, not forgotten. Binge drinking satisfies the latter. But again, I fully condone responsible drinking that results in a buzz that provides a level of physical pleasure.

Read my post #23.

i would think binge drinking happens often because 3-4 drinks makes you lose inhibition(s) enough to have another one, or two, or seven drinks. its impressive that you haven't drank, dontno, but i would guess most people here have, and at some points, to excess. it can happen some night after a good friday prelim and you feel like superman (no one i know of, of course) and you think you're just going to throw back a few white russians and enjoy em. occasionally, you do something like end up at the beer pong table and never lose. the next day ends up being pretty awful, and you vow never to drink again. but surely enough, your liver arrogantly asks you "is that all you've got?!"

yes, underage drinking happens here. at frat parties all they ask for is your cornell ID and you're in. police knows it happens- they aren't stupid and probably drank underage as well. occasionally they play the control card and knock on a house's door. this effectively scares off underage drinkers and/or all non-brothers in case of the dry house.

hell, underage drinking happens outside of frats. i know very, very few people who haven't had a drink before 21. in college (even HS) it occurs, very frequently.

I've drank and got strumbling drunk before. I don't know where you got the idea that I haven't (that wasn't meant in an aggressive tone). I also like your explanation of how moderate drinking can sometimes lead to binge drinking. But my problem is with the attitude that generally accompanies binge drinking.

How many times have you heard, "Dude I'm gonna get so f_cked up tonight!!!!!" I'm not talking about the kid who loses inhibitions and forgets how much he's had. I'm talking about the kid who makes a conscious decision to drink a ton tonight, then goes out and accomplishes that task. Those people don't make sense to me (for the reasons I stated earlier).
