Alchohol/Drugs

some questions for current students…if they arent “ok” for this forum just don’t answer them and tell me so…

some colleges are extremely rediculous about alchohol…given that its pretty much a given that underage people will drink. How lenient would you rate Cornell in terms of allowing alcohol to be freely consumed? (1-10, 1 being most lenient)

marijuana. how easy is it to get away with? is there is a lot…considering ithaca is in the middle of nowhere…but i guess supply and demand economics would supersede?

other drugs…how common? shrooms/acid/etc/etc…DMT?

What % of YOUR freshman class would you guess had never done any pot or alchohol in high school? Walking around on tour I saw some people I sure wouldn’t wanna hang out with…lol.

What kind of alchohol is most common on campus? Cornell is a big school so I wouldn’t expect it to be a problem but I know some small schools sometimes only have Beer and beer en masse. Beer sucks…imo…but I’m sure after a few times forcing it down you’d get used to it. Is hard alch readily available (both at parties and to get for your room)? Captain’s spiced? And for beer…good stuff or **** like Natty light?

cornell is like a 3. They can't let you drink in your rooms, but they will not bust you unless you are loud and obnoxious. Some RAs even drink with their students. Basically they only write you up if they're forced to by circumstances. Being drunk is ok as long as you're not disruptive. In terms of the frats, alcohol is always there.

You can get it easily, and kids don't have trouble finding places to smoke. Some even smoke in their rooms, though that's a good way to get busted if you're not careful. They're more serious about drugs than alc., but still, if you're not stupid and obvious it's not a problem.

They are not that common, but there are a few kids who use. So far I've heard of shrooms and acid

I have no clue, but it doesn't matter, because there are tons of kids who go out and party and are experienced with stuff like that, tons who don't do that stuff and stay in, and there are kids in the middle, too. There's a scene for everyone.

Milwaukee's Best, Natural Ice, and Keystone Light. Beer is the drink of frat parties. Kids keep alcohol in their rooms and pre-game so they're already tipsy and don't need to drink too much alcoholic-poop-water (aka the first two of those beers). Also, once you make friends with any of the brothers, they're more than willing to mix you good drinks in their rooms. There is a liquor store "grandma's" that doesn't really care about fake IDs and stuff, and a place called Miyake's has saki bombing without carding. You can get your stuff, whatever you want. You can also go through cornell and stay easily unexposed to it if you choose to do so. It's a good deal for everyone.

I'd give it a 2 or 3. My RA doesn't really care if we drink, as long as we're not belligerent You can't walk around in the hall or campus with alcohol, but you can drink in your dorms. I've walked around outside with a beer, but you shouldn't. You can walk around or to parties with your special pepsi or your alcoholic water bottle, though.

marijuana. how easy is it to get away with? is there is a lot...considering ithaca is in the middle of nowhere...but i guess supply and demand economics would supersede?

I know people who have smoked in their rooms, like idiots, and have not gotten in trouble. I know people who have smoked in broad daylight next to the dorms or next to the dining hall. It's really easy to get away with, though I don't think smokingi n the dorm is a great idea. Pot is abundant, you shouldn't have trouble getting it.

other drugs...how common? shrooms/acid/etc/etc...DMT?

Let's see...I've heard of people on shrooms, acid and coke, so far. I think shrooms would be the most common of the three. People obviously aren't as open about drugs other than pot, so if you're into anything hardcore, it's going to be harder to get than pot.

What % of YOUR freshman class would you guess had never done any pot or alchohol in high school? Walking around on tour I saw some people I sure wouldn't wanna hang out with...lol.

I've been drinking forever, as have many people at Cornell. Then you have the new drinkers, who make for wonderful, belligerent amusement at their own expenses. I've also smoked quite a bit of pot in my life, but it's not as popular as drinking at Cornell. Lots of people smoke, though. If you're in a group of 10 chances are more than one smoke with you. That all being said, I think it's really immature to judge people on their drug/drinking experience. Hopefully you'll grow up before you get to Cornell and realize that people are not defined by the mind-altering substances they take. Drinking and doing drugs don't make you a cool kid, incase you weren't aware ;).

Cheap beer is generally the fraternity beer of choice, since they have to supply the thirsty masses. Beast/Milkwaukee's Best is both the most popular and the most nasty beer at frat parties. To avoid forcing yourself into getting used to it you pregame thoroughly in your dorm. In your room you can regulate the quality of your liquor (it usually starts off as quality stuff and gradually progresses to big plastic bottles of 10 dollar vodka as poverty strikes). Alcohol is pretty available; there's usually someone who will buy you liquor (my friend is turning 21 over break :)). Or there's Grandma's, as Sparticus said. One night I knocked on several doors and found some alcohol that way. People are pretty generous with their liquor, if you're polite about it.

Sounds like you're pretty concerned with drinking and drugs.

Are quality cheap beers like Dos equis and yuenglings? Are they common?

not common, but obviously available if you want to buy them. Like I said: can's of Milwaukee's Best ("Beast"), Natural Ice ("Natty Ice"), and less commonly, Keystone Light ("Thank god this doesn't taste like s***!")

I've seen Dos equis before, but it's a rare commodity.

Well I havn't posted to scare the prefrosh in a while, but I'm home from Cornell on break, so lets have some fun.

Same as everyone said about drinking as a freshman in dorms (I'm going to assume after freshman year you live off campus, if you don't that usually means your a looser and couldn't/didn't join a frat or didn't have any friends to live with in collegetown)
Also you can basically find a party in collegetown or a frat any time where it's everything goes. Also a bunch of the bars don't card tough at all.

A list of the Cornell bars in order of easyness to get into with fakes:
Dunbars-Ithaca Highschool girls for the pickings
Johnny O's- This is only if your a hot WASP or JAP girl, otherwise it can be tough
Ruloffs-Easy, but they do take fakes if they spot it. Voted Playboy mag's college bar of the month once, dont know why
Dinos-Tougher then Ruloffs
Chapter House-This one's tougher only because mostly Profs and Alumni etc. go there, making a 17 year old frosh chick look a bit out of place
The Palms- Holy grail of fake IDs, you're gonna need a nice California fake, none of that New Jersey sh|t

Ganja, even as a freshman it's easy to get high. Some people do it in their rooms, stairwells, right outside. The less brave (and less stupid) usually just go to the woods all arround the dorms at night, pretty safe. If anyone tells you there isn't alot, they're an idiot. There is soo much reefer at this school, you just have to know the crowd. Every towny grows it, some show me pictures of their crops on their cellphones. Often times if you don't know the right guy though you will get ripped off BAD. Make friends with a frat guy.

Others. While not as common as weed, still deffinitly there. A drug dealing friend of mine once said "Coke follows the money" And there is deffinitly money at Cornell. Hard drugs are the type of thing you could go all four years and never see. But with things like coke and smack, you never see it unless you do it or your friends do. If you know the right crowd, you see it everywhere. And this crowd isn't a minority, I could list off over half a dozen frats/sorrities that live off this sh|t. Oh, and you can buy whippets at the downtown headshops and the porno store.

I'm skipping this, you can surround yourself with whatever type of people you want

It's all beast, natty, and keystone at frats. But if you're clever, or have a large pair of tits, you can usually find at least one party that has some "gimmick". That may be some bottled beer (yeung, dos, carona) or some champaigne (well not really, I mean andre), wine on the jewish holidays. Also, almost every frat party always has several coolers of generic mixed drink. Usually like jungle juice, or vodka and sprite type thing. And of course, everythings one notch classier in collegetown, when you crash some dude's party and drink the bottles he bought.

That was fun. For those that wonder, I'm a junior Engineer frat boy. I party alot, if you have any more questions about parties, booze, b|tches, substances, ask away.

Spanks, Sparticus, Gomestar...
I really hate drugs and smokin and drinkin... have never done it nd will never...
can u tell me which residency is the strictest abt these... i think i wanna go there

I know you weren't asking me, but I'll answer anyway. You don't get to pick your dorm unless its a program house. The regular dorms are all about the same. Exception is the townhouses because you live in like an apartment with 2 or 3 other guys, so that could be your best bet, but you can't request that. You can request program houses such as Jam, Ujamaa, Risley, etc. But in many cases these can be even worse for alcohol and especially drugs.

so u can't chose ur Dorm!!!!! what if u really want one dorm or suppoe u find the people at the dorm assigned to u not to ur likin...can u shift dorms then???

You should get used to the drugs/alcohol/smokin' Arjun cause it's EVERYWHERE.

If you dont' like, then just don't hang around with those types of people. I'm sure there's a lot of different groups of kids out there for everyone.

As far as I know, you're basically random. If people on your floor suck, too bad. Just like the real world, you have to learn to get along with them.

AASSDDFF, it's easy for guys who c it all arnd them. U guys must be seein ur neighbors doin it or guys at school foin it...well back here if ur caught takin drugs...ur sent out of school and smokin is blasphemy. Ive grown up in a conservative society and have no regrets abt it

I'm not bashing your or looking down on you. I didn't pick up most of my bad habbits until college anyway (most). My point is that no one is going to care about your up bringing. No one is going to force you to do anything, but at the same time you can't force people to act/talk/do different things arround you. You will have to prepare yourself for the possibility you will be arround people who have vastly different ideas on morality and acceptible social behavior. If that scares you, you should consider a school in your native country, or a much more conservative school in America.

ahhh, India.

Arjun, you should kinda chill out. Get used to it. I used to be like you. I dont do this **** and never plan to, but half my friends do. It's the hard reality of life - you're gonna see it wherever you go - and, like it or not, It's there everywhere, even in India (though to a lesser extent).

And CornellEDer - 4) what the **** do you mean? Some of the coolest guys I know dont do that ****.

I think it's wrong to judge or make friends with people on the basis of their preference regarding alcohol. There are teetotallers who are cool and nice, and losers who just like to get drunk all the time. And vice versa. Anyway, drinking/partying scene is only one aspect of college life, right? Unless, I suppose, you intend on drinking vodka and beer instead of water.

Morals are relative :p

and you can't pick your dorm, but it's not like people are going to shove drugs and alcohol in your face, so chill out...

well, i guess i am over reactin... it's just that i'm soooo scared to live in a dorm away from my family and all... and ive heard some weird stories abt raggin at univs

Get used to the drinking and drugs. I have never drank or smoked (of any kind), and I don't plan to drink until I am of age, but that doesn't mean I look down on people that do do that stuff. Half the people I know drink or have had alcohol. Also, on my floor wing, about 5 people reguraly do drugs. It's no big deal, I'm friends with them, and they are reasonable in their use as to not be obnoxious when drunk or high. There has only been one time when one guy was drunk and was getting a little wild, but that was it.

Don't worry about being in a dorm where 100% of the people drink and smoke besides you, b/c everyone at Cornell is friendly and no one would look down on you because you don't follow their path, and most people at Cornell are smart enough not to get too wild in their usage.
