undergrad business school...

is biz school considered more difficult than other colleges???

In general or at the University of Maryland. The Smith School of Business is considered an LEP at Maryland. To be considered for freshmen placement in the Young Fellow's program, you need at least a 3.2 and 1300 SAT score. If you do not have this, you will be placed in the Market and Society program which is done thru the College of Letter and Sciences(undecided). And the magic number for admission into Smith, which you can apply to at the end of your sophomore year, is an estimated 3.5 GPA. Although, if you have amazing/good resume(internships, leadership positions(RAs,OAs), and amazing essays then you could probably get in for junior year. Maryland also has this special program where you can get your Business degree and it will say UMD-CP on your diploma, but you take courses at another campus( Shady Grove).

Hope this helps!

I see your'e from California, why not apply to Berkeley. Haus is ranked like #5 or #6 for undergraduate B-schools.

thanks for the info...
and i am actually applying to cal...but my stats are considerably lower than its average...

the business school here is really well funded and there are a lot of opportunities, as far as harder than other colleges, its a joke, the classes are way too easy, business people i know can miss every class and still get As

can you guys be more specific about LEP and Market and Society program??they are both in smith right??

Dnduswo,

No. The M&S program is apart of the School of Letters and Sciences. It's a small program designated for people who want to get into the business school, but did not meet the cutoff. However, you can go in as undecided an then apply for Smith in the middle of your soph year. In Markets and Society program, you are in most of your CORE business classes with the same individuals in the M&S program. So, you become well acquainted with your competition.

Actually,

I applied undecided and enrolled recently in the School of Arts and Humanities as a Communication major, but I plan to apply to Smith or transfer to a more presitigious business school like Olin(WashU) or Goziueta(Emory) eitheer for sophomore entrance or junior entrance. Though, a lot of potential business majors double-major in Comm like I am doing.

dnduswo- LEP (Limited Enrollment Program) is a general term used to describe a selective program that you apply "into" rather than just declaring it as your major. Business is one LEP, also Journalism, Psychology, Music, and a few others. Applicants who don't get into the LEP major program that they designated on their application can still be (and many are) admitted to the university as an undecided major.

Also important to note is that not everyone who didn't get admitted to the business school gets into Markets & Society. There are plenty of temporary undecided or economics majors who are hoping to transfer into the business school.

If you don't get into M&S, the few classes that those students do take are all very easy to get into for freshmen, so M&S is by no means a requirement for business school admission.

nypm-- are your friends underclassmen? i used to feel like if i studied, going to class in those big lectures was pointless. but many of the smaller, upper-level business classes are participation based, and missing every class would fail you immediately. also, please introduce me to one of your friends who can pass exams just by reading the book-- i'll give them my books and let them take my exams!! :)

yup freshmen but they have so much easier than everyone else.. all the engineers and science majors have it rough from the start

magic number isnt a 3.5, its 3.0+........ some 3.8s and 3.9s dont get in. Just be well rounded

It's an LEP, however, I come to realize that most of the majors within business school are really laid back. Accounting and finance are maybe the only 2 hard ones.

if your gpa is between 3.0-3.5 and you're taking all IB and AP classes w/ alot of ec's do you suggest to apply undecided or just try to get into the business school?

you can PM me or reply here..thanks

you have nothing to lose by applying to the business school. if you don't choose a second choice major, and don't get into the business school, they'll put you in letters & sciences, so you'll end up undecided anyway.
