i'm still an undergrad in college... my parents think that if i don't major in business economics, then i can't get any good business-related jobs and thus, it will be a roadblock in getting an MBA. my interest is in political science as a major, but i do think the business field may be appealing (although economics is very boring...).

what types of business fields hire political science majors? how common is that practice? are any of these business jobs for political science majors potentially impressive enough to get into a top MBA program?

Most of the 'plum' business jobs, like management consulting and investment banking, care more about where you got your degree than what you got it in. For example, a guy who majored in music at Harvard is more likely to get hired at Goldman Sachs than a guy who majored in finance or economics at a no-name school. Whether you think that's fair or not fair, that's how it works.

Even if you're not shooting for such high-prestige careers, the fact is, what you majored in really matters a lot less than people think it does. What tends to be far more important is your work experience, as demonstrated by coops and summer internships. Very few companies are going to say "I see your coop and internship experience is exactly what we want, but since you majored in the wrong subject, we're not going to hire you." Hence, I would be far more worried about finding these coop/internship experiences than about what you major in.
