Undergrad research

I’m starting to think about getting a job my freshman year. I’d really like to work in a bio lab, maybe at the hospital. Is it possible for 1) freshman to find positions in labs 2) find paying positions? I found the UG research site for BioMed…http://bms.brown.edu/bug/research.html, but it seems somewhat outdated. Could any current Brown students help me out?

Also, I’m interested in humanities research, like linguistics or history. Is that possible for freshman?

Any other comments on having a job freshman year, like if it’s difficult to do or balance with other stuff, would definitely be appreciated.

Thanks very much!

you ought to be able to do research as a freshman in whatever you want, simply e-mail a few professors whose interests match your own. those who can take on another student will most likely contact you and ask to meet in person.

getting paid during your first two semesters for research is a little more difficult because you'd either have to apply for a competitive source of funding or be valuable enough to a professor to be paid through a grant. from your summer after your freshman year onwards, it becomes relatively easy to get a paid position. more funding sources open up, including ones just for PLME's (PLME's have their own funding for humanities and social science research as well)
