Undergrad Schools Importance for Law School: PLEASE HELP!

Hey all!

Okay, so I am a freshman in college, and I have already transferred once. I spent my first semester at Purdue, but decided the school was not for me. I have a 3.47 from my semester here.

I transferred to USD (university of San Diego) for my second semester, and I love the school. I anticipate having about 3.7 from my semester here. However, my family's financial situation has very drastically changed.

My family can no longer afford my tuition here, and I honestly can not afford a tuition in many places right now. It is a huge change for me and my family, but due to the way financial need is calculated, I won't be able to receive help.

This is the background, now for the question. I had about a 2050 SAT (I don't remember exactly), and I am doing well at my school. I want to go on to law school and I am not sure how much undergraduate school ranking matters.

The Kings College in New York has offered me what comes out to being almost full tuition. I am temped to take it, but I do not want to mess up my chances of getting into a good law school. I can't transfer to a state school because California state schools only accept upper division transfers. If I stay at USD I will have to take out about 35,000-40,000 a year. If I go to Kings I will have to take out 2000-5000 a year.

What should I do?

anyone? bump

Law school entrance is almost entirely tied to your grades and LSAT. You could have discovered this with a quick search using the button up above.

In general terms, law school admissions is more dependent on your GPA and your LSAT than on anything else. Yes, a degree from one of the very top public or private colleges/universities might help a bit, but you aren’t in a position right now to either be admitted or to pay for one of those. You can’t borrow the money you need for USD without a co-signer. Kings is offering you a very good deal. You should accept it, go there, and spend every spare second studying so that you can get the GPA you would need for law school admissions.

Yes it does matter where you go to undergrad, i know law admissions counselors and advisors and the honest ones will tell you that undergrad institutions are RANKED i know this for a FACT.

That said, you should have stood at Purdue, but getting out of USD for Kings is fine. 1) USD is not highly regarded and 2) it’s ridiculously overpriced.

Even though USD is ranked 94th and Kings in “unranked” according to US News?

Every single year people who graduate from institutions that aren’t ranked get into law school. Do not base your decision on USNWR rankings alone.

If you don’t go to Kings this fall, what will you do? Will you work? Will you enlist in a military service? Will you join a religious order? Will you re-enroll at Pudue?

It is OK to turn down the offer from Kings. However, if you do that you need to have a solid Plan B.

One more option: commute from you home to the closest community college and graduate from there with an associate’s degree. Then transfer to a four-year school that CC has an articulation agreement with.
