Undergrad Seeking Advice for Possible Transfer to Mcgill

<p>Hi all,</p>

<p>Before I start my questions for my transfer to McGill, I will give a little background on myself to perhaps help you shape your advice...</p>

<p>I am from MTL and I did my CEGEP (Pure and Applied Sciences) and graduated with fairly high R-Score (33.8125) in 2011 and got admitted to Mcgill (Honours) Mechanical Engineering (no scholarships) and at Concordia U in Mathematical and Computational Finance with Co-op (w/ an entrance scholarship).</p>

<p>I was very naive when I made my decision: I chose Concordia U because the program required a higher R-Score and claimed to admit only "15 highly qualified" students in the program, and I thought the description of the program sounded interesting (Math + Finance + Comp. Sci.)... I guess I mainly got attracted by how selective they claimed their program was.
I am expected to graduate next year in May 2015 as it is a 4-year program with Co-op. My current GPA is: 3.92/4.3.</p>

<p>Now it is almost 3 years later and I really, really, really regret my choice. The main reason being that I regret my choice plan to attend graduate school (desirably top programs in the US, eventually) and ConU has very little to no reputation (especially out of Canada). Also, I always felt like a strong student should always go to a place where there would be other motivated and strong students, which is far from being the case at ConU. </p>

<p>Lastly, the area of study I wish to go into for Grad. school is in Statistics and McGill has an Honours program in that field which looks very solid. I was also thinking of doing my masters there (in stats again) if I do make the undergrad transfer, before going on to doctoral programs.</p>

<p>Questions:</p>

<p>Is the transfer worth it? Do Grad. Committees pay a lot of attention to the Undergrad. institution attended?</p>

<p>If I have 75 credits accumulated (mainly from Math&Stats, some from JMSB/Finance + Comp. Sci.), how many credits will I be able to transfer? How much longer will it be for my Undergrad?</p>

<p>I am kind of depressed and regret the decision I made back when I finished CEGEP. So anyways I am open to your advice and pointers if you have any.</p>

<p>I applied to McGill as a transfer student and am still waiting for the result. I think transfer is a worthwhile decision cuz of McGill’s reputation and alumni quality, which will benefit you a life time. After all, you have to carry the education background all through your career. It makes the leap to top US grad school easier, provides better alumni body (who may help you in career, be your friends, etc). ConCor U is ok in Canada. But as you said, it has literally no reputation anywhere else in the world…I’ll definitely try to shift to McGill. </p>

<p>@Eclipse1992 Keep in mind that McGill (like other universities) have a residency requirement - 60 credits must be done at McGill (I think it’s the same for all faculties). So at a minimum, you will have to stay at McGill for 2 more years if you transfer. </p>

<p>I’m not sure how many credits you’ll be able to transfer because it’s different for each individual. You won’t find out for sure until they’ve assessed all your courses (which happens after you get admitted). </p>
