Hey there, I am looking at colleges and I can't really decide what is best because I dont know what the deal is on undergraduate business programs. My main dilemma is deciding between Duke and UVA. Obviously, UVA has a KICK BUTT undergraduate business program, however, I love Duke and I think it is more of a fit for me personally. Also, Duke has a public policy major which is also very interesting to me as well.

If i went to UVA I would major in undergraduate business. Then I would apply to graduate business schools.

If I went to Duke, I would probably major in Public Policy or Economics and then get the "Management" certificate which would show interest in business.

Basically, my questions is, would my chances be equal at getting into a quality graduate business program if I went to UVA (instate and designated business major) or if I went to Duke (awesome fit personally and more diverse major/certificate compilation, but no specific undergrad business major)

also, at Duke I would probably have no tuition... but at UVA i would have probably 20,000 (room, board, tuition) per year

both schools are highly selective. you haven’t given us your stats so i dont know your chances, but dont count chickens quite yet. see whether you even get admitted to both, and if you do, then start thinking of these things. apply to the programs you’ve mentioned and then take things down to the nitty gritty. otherwise plan on getting admitted to just one of these schools and liking both as good college options, and also have safeties that you like a lot.

if you do get admitted to both, i would recommend posting these kinds of questions on the specific college’s forums on here. good luck!

i believe going to duke represents a dream within a dream, inside another dream in a dream. but then again, i’m no expert. there’s only one thing you should know about me. I specialize in a very specific type of security, subconscious security.

Just a heads up, it’s very difficult going from undergrad straight to a top notch graduate business school. If money is an issue, UVA is the clear choice. However, you must realize that you apply to the UVA undergrad business program your sophomore year. There is that chance you won’t make it in. However, both schools are top notch schools, but if you feel that Duke is the better fit, go with the better fit school.

Unlike most types of grad school u don’t apply to MBA programs directly from college. You spend 3-6 years working and then go back to school. That said most grad schools find what you have been doing in between undergrad and when you apply to MBA programs more important than what you did during undergrad. It doesn’t help you much if you studied business in undergrad. Depending on the school you may find it boring to do both your BBA or BS and MBA program at the same school since most of the time the programs are relatively similar in their core. Plus if you do your undergrad in business you don’t necessarily need to do your grad in business as well, if you just need a masters degree.
