Unhelpful guidance counselor

Hello everybody,

My high school guidance counselor does not know how to give proper advice. I asked her what I can do to improve my chances of getting into elite colleges but all she says is get good grades and test scores. If I ask her what AP classes I can take for my major, then she says it's up to me. I hope to major in Biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University and move on to med school, and all she can say is do the best you can in high school. I am currently in the 10th grade and hope to receive some advice. Any help would be appreciated.

I’ll join the unhelpful group. What your counselor has said is absolutely correct. Do the best you can, but don’t strain yourself. What kind of advice are you expecting? I can’t give you a magical combination of classes to take and scores to reach for.

In addition to the unhelpful advice I’ve just reiterated:

Do a little research on Johns Hopkins and see what “goals” or “standards” it sets for the medical program. What attracts to you to its program?

You’re a sophomore. Enjoy your youth.

Oh, and a tiny bit more helpful advice:

AP Bio seems to match. Maybe AP English Lit. to develop your writing skills.

It is really up to you. I’d recommend taking AP Bio, AP Chemistry and AP Calc. The rest is all up to you, just keep your grades up!

Thanks a lot you guys

she is right. the passion, the extra curriculars, the love for what you want to do is something that is shown and expressed, not something that a guidance counselor would recommend you to do.

good luck

Take the ACT or SAT in September or October of your junior year. Then you can know where you are at with scores, and what you need to improve on.
