My daughter is a 6’ freckled redhead. She is not going to get a lot of roles that most girls would play. It’s important to know your type, be confident and comfortable in your skin. Directors/auditors will notice…
My mom actually worked as a nurse at Stagedoor for me to be able to attend. Without her doing that for me, I wouldn’t have been able to attend for the past 7 years. My family otherwise would not have had the $ for me to be able to attend. I’m sorry if my post wasn’t helpful or was offensive! I just saw some questions being asked about girls at CCM and the mystery girl that was accepted this year and thought I would give a brief background of myself! I’m also pretty modest so I tend to downplay things. I’m sorry if I offended anyone!
@MTLUVER
I don’t think you offended anyone. It’s a matter of us discussing the privilege in college auditions if one has commericial looks. It’s always tough because we don’t know anything about the posters on here and even we did, ones physical appearance didn’t solely carry them too the acceptance.
For me, I’m very envious, and just wanting to know the secret to getting the Cincinnati acceptance, I have my audition in less than two weeks.
MTLUVER, in no way was your post offensive! Congratulations on your acceptance!!
@MTLUVER - as others have said, your post was fine. Congrats on your acceptance, you should be very proud of your accomplishment.
The mere mention of certain words and phrases can sometimes set off a bit of tempest here on the MT forum such as: “Stagedoor,” “NYU Merit Aid,” “Audition Coaches,” etc. (smile)
My daughter also was able to attend Stagedoor because I worked there, and there are kids who scrimp and save and work after school to be able to go there. There is also nothing about Stagedoor, other than experience being in shows (which you can get elsewhere too) that really prepares you for college auditions. They do not do audition prep, and the people that work there are not at all involved in college auditions. So yeah, it is tremendous fun for theater kids and they make lifelong friends and gain a lot of experience and build confidence, but Stagedoor per se doesn’t help you get into college. Neither does experience as a child actor unless maybe you are famous. Current talent and potential are what get you into MT programs.
@MTLUVER - I will join the chorus. Congratulations on a fabulous acceptance to CCM! And thanks so much for your posts. I do hope you will continue to share your thoughts. There are far more parents on CC than there are students, so I enjoy hearing things from the student perspective. I look forward to hearing how your other auditions go and what school you finally choose. Whoever it is will be very lucky to have you.
Thanks everyone!! @ParachuteBoy I hope your audition goes well! BAL!
@MTLUVER You were not at all offensive. It is awesome to hear from the students! I have had the privilege of watching you perform (Stagedoor) and have no doubt you will do well wherever you land. You have an irresistible combination of talent, looks and humility. You go, girl!
@MTLUVER I was not offended by your post and not disparaging your attendance at Stagedoor. I wasn’t aware parents could work at this camp and get a discount etc for their child to attend. My point was only that not everyone would have the option to go there, if you did not live in the area then obviously a parent wouldn’t be able to work there . Plus it would take a lot of after school jobs to work and save $6000 to go , but again not impossible. My post about Stagedoor was simply referring to the comment that it is an "exclusive group " who go there.
I am certain you are a talented girl and much luck to you on your journey.
Just to clarify, @theaterwork, staff that work at Stagedoor are housed there, just like the kids…
Yes, @Calliene. Thanks! We live nowhere near NY (although of course I wish I did) hehe
@MTLUVER sincere congratulations on your CCM acceptance! My D was accepted last year, and it is a fantastic program. I know how hard she has worked for years, and I would hate if she were on this sight feeling that she had to explain/ defend her acceptance anywhere to anyone. A good many people on this site would love to go to CCM for the training and networking advantages they would have after college, and they would not apologize after the fact for being presented with opportunities they may not have had otherwise. Don’t feel like you have to explain your acceptance to anyone. I don’t know if CCM will be your final choice when it’s all said and done, but it’s a wonderful option to have this early in the audition season. Congratulations and Best of luck!
@limbo2019 Thank you! You’re so right. I needed to hear that so thank you!
@Calliene yes I didn’t know parents could work as staff and then stay on site as well just like the students. I don’t see this option on their site anywhere so I’m assuming you would have to apply as staff separately with them then? Like apply for employment? I don’t see that option listed anywhere…
I’ve always hesitated to say this because I don’t want Stagedoor to be inundated with parents wanting to work there so their kids can go there. Like any summer camp, theater camps need nurses, and they sometimes hire parents of kids. They would probably prefer not to, lol, because it has the potential to complicate things a little. The parent has to vigilantly NOT be part of the kid’s camp life or interfere in any way. I actually hardly ever saw my kid when we were both there which was for the best. So you will not see it on the site or as an option. But almost all camps do this for hard-to-fill jobs.
Never heard of this camp till this conversation:) But it looks like a regular camp where if you are a staff member working there you live at the camp. This is true for every sleep away camp my kids attended. They only attended the traditional “in the woods, horse riding, hiking, swimming, sleep in tents or cabins type camps” but my quick google search of summer employment at Stagedoor Manor made it look like the same type of arrangement and usually staff members get a discount or free boarding for their kids. Most camps and I suspect that includes Stagedoor are desperate for staff sot any perk is a big help. Being a camp staff person is lots of work at any camp. Great fun but lots of work.
Follow up. I know nothing about this camp. I am sure it is great!! We live on the West coast and did not get into the acting/mt world till a year ago, or at least all our focus was on our local stuff not country wide programs, so from what I am hearing it is a great program, tons of fun and great training. I was just focused on what staff could get, i.e. at almost every camp I know the staff lives at the camp and like private schools your kids get tuition/camp cost breaks if you work for the school or camp. Just wanted to clarify.
Thanks @sbc . I understand the whole parent working at Stagedoor thing now. Just like any other camp where you can work and attend with your child.
Wow I should not have said anything about Stagedoor…there are definitely topics on CC to avoid…
On another note - One week till Chicago! — and I don’t want to jinx it but so far weather looking ok!
