1/2 a mile in 5 degree weather for a donut?? The zipper on my ‘man-suit’ gets stuck at around 15-degrees. I figured I’d make the cabby stop there on the way to the airport.
Unfortunately, there are also scores of posts of “I nailed that audition but didn’t get in!”
So I have sweet spot on the Palmer house mezzanine level with leather chairs and if I move I know I’ll lose 'em. But I really want Starbucks. I’ll buy if you fly? Any takers? #noimnotjustlazy.
It’s snowing again.
On another note, it is amazing to me what I have heard kids and parents talking about around the hotel in public places, even on the audition floors. Auditors and college employees are everywhere people! And you have given them a great big photo of yourself with name and everything! If you can’t say something good and positive, don’t say anything! Save it for the privacy of
Anyone know how Carnegie Mellon is handling the auditions at Chicago? My child has a 8-12 slot tomorrow morning but wasn’t sure if it would really take that long? Any insight would be much appreciated.
Last year Carnegie Mellon held an info session first thing. Then they called the auditioners’ names in groups of four as I remember. The D was not there the full 4 hours and I believe she was in the first group called. I assume if an auditioner’s name is in the last group, they will be there until the bitter end.
@MTParents2015 my S and I had the “10 block rule.” We never discussed auditions, schools, programs, etc within 10 blocks of the site. When we were in NY and Boston, we only talked in the hotel room. You just never know.
Huffington Post and AccuWeather just published a list of the ten snowiest colleges in the country, and none are in Illinois. Several are in New York, Michigan and Minnesota. I’m just sayin’.

I hope everyone is having a great time making memories at Unifieds!
The “auditors are everywhere” thing is REAL. I rode in the elevator to my SCAD audition with the auditor…and at NYU I bumped into both the voice and acting evaluators before I knew who they were. Thankfully I was nice and I smiled!
Also, it’s true that what kids talk about is questionable. I’ve been blogging my whole process and I made a post about what I think you should/should not talk to the other auditioners about. At Unifieds one of my friends kept talking about how his auditions had gone and said some negative things about how he was treated by the auditors. It’s hard because you want to be a part of the conversation (especially if you already know the people you’re talking to!) but at some point you just have to stick on those noise cancelling headphones and tune it all out.
Side Story of Unifieds: The Palmer House customer service = 5 Stars
My D went out to dinner with friends her age who all had a “reunion” at Palmer House while the parents/guardians stayed and dined at Palmer House. Two moms ordered salads and were not happy with them. Very politely they complained to the waiter about them. In comes the manager, a very nice young lady, who not only comps the salads but turns the conversation to the history of the hotel (a real-life romance…the hotel was a wedding gift from Mr. Palmer to his bride), a private tour of the hotel “one-room-museum” (which had been locked/closed) and a finish at the hotel bakery with complimentary famous-hotel-brownie & recipe! Turns out Mrs. Plisbury conspired with the chef at the Palmer to create the first brownie! From Wikepedia (“so it must be true”) “A prominent Chicago socialite, Bertha Palmer, whose husband owned the Palmer House Hotel there, asked a pastry chef for a dessert suitable for ladies attending the Chicago 1893 World Fair. She requested a confection smaller than a piece of cake, though still retaining cake-like characteristics, easily eaten from boxed lunches. The first brownies featured an apricot glaze and walnuts, and are still made at the hotel according to the original recipe.”
@addicted2MT I absolutely agree that the Palmer House customer servicse is outstanding!!
It was all really fun. D had a great time. Can’t wait to see how this all shakes out for everyone. We even liked the snow. But will enjoy our 70 degree weekend.
Shocked at the schools she connected with (and the ones that didn’t). So weird. A 15 min audition became an hour and she is smitten.
I’m hearing rumors that some schools told kids that they want them. Or that they will at least be wait listed. Hate to stir the pot
And the kids and parents I saw were awesome. Did not notice anyone saying anything they wouldn’t want heard.
Really fun experience all the way. Now I can’t wait to see my bed
Oh and how to handle the walkin applications? The ones she loved certainly, but the other ones? Wait for an artistic acceptance? What to do???
Chicago is a great city with fabulous people who are very genuine and down to earth. The Palmer House is an outstanding hotel in a great location Even with the weather you can see why the schools do Unifieds in Chicago.
@winnieroot I was wondering the same thing about walk-ins! Is it possible to get an artistic acceptance without applying academically? I did 3 in NY and have applied to one so far, but it was the only one I LOVED. It required two essays though, so it wasn’t like I could whip it off on the spot at Unifieds.
Someone kindly told me no. You have to apply. D spent the morning doing that
I imagine some may assume you are not interested in their program should you not go ahead and submit an application. Thus, it could effect your artistic acceptance. I would err on the side of applying if possible if you are at all interested in attending.
Why would any school give you a formal offer of admission you if you hadn’t formally applied?
My daughter did 3 walk-ins at Chicago Unifieds last year. She applied to all 3 after auditioning. A month later she received an artistic acceptance to one, but was not academically accepted until 3 weeks after that. The artistic acceptance did stipulate that she needed to be academically accepted for the offer to be valid. As vvnstar states you should err on the side of applying but only if you are interested in attending.
