Unique case - need opinions/advice.

Hi,

I’m Russian, but I have been living in Thailand for most of my life. I graduated high school at 15. I’m a freshman at Webster University, which is the only American univesity in Southeast Asia, but it doesn’t rank that high in America.

My high school GPA would be around 3.7 (12 A’s, 6 B’s), although I don’t know how to accurately calculate it. Current GPA at Webster is 3.9. I haven’t taken SAT’s or ACT’s yet, but I’m planning 5-6 months of preperation to get the highest score possible.

Mostly targeting small-medium Liberal Arts colleges, preferably on the east coast: Williams, Amherst, Wellesley, Dartmouth, and so on.

What are my chances?

The "What are my chances?" threads are not that useful. In this case, it is totally impossible to even guess without knowing what your SAT scores will be. However, you would certainly stand out from the crowd when you apply, and that should help you a lot.

Well, suppose I'd have ~1400 on SAT's or ~33 on ACT's.

I also forgot to mention - financial aid is a factor.

1400 would be a little low for the schools you listed, but I personally don't like to try to second guess adcoms. I would really imagine that colleges would like to have a Russian student who attended an American school in Thailand. American colleges really like diversity. For the SAT scores, colleges take things into account such as the local high school, the background of the applicant's parents, and so on. If your parents don't speak English in the home, that would be a factor.

You need to be careful about financial aid. Only a few years ago, American colleges did not give financial aid to international students. Recently, the top colleges began to go need-blind for international applicants. You should see how any college handles this before you apply. Some US colleges have a lot of students from specific countries. You might also check on this for any colleges that you are interested in.

I don't know a whole lot about applying as an international student. I would work with your guidance counselor at your school, especially since you said that it was an American school. Some websites I have from a book might help you. Hopefully all of the links work because I haven't tested them and the book was published in 2000. These are:

33 converts to about a 1460-1500- not low AT ALL

Yeah, I'm still confused about the whole scoring process. I mean my high school was hard and no one had anything near a 4.0, but yet so many people from high schools in America get 4.0 easily. Then taking SAT's or ACT's into consideration - hard to judge averages.

Thanks for the links though.
