Ok so my mother is undocumented (single mother) and hasn’t filed her taxes yet. She was going to for the 2 previous years but missed the deadline by a day this year. Now, my fafsa processed but I was selected for verification and need to provide a tax return transcript, but since she never filed how is she supposed to get one? I am a U.S. citizen by the way. Will I be still able to receive financial aid? Without it we will be unable to pay tuition, and I already started class this week which means I’m going to be in debt with the cancellation of my classes.
“Missed the deadline by a day” implies she HAS filed but did it late. If that is not true, she needs to file ASAP. Otherwise you won’t be getting any aid.
Checking for clarity. Are you saying that she missed the April 15 filing date by one day…so she didn’t bother to file…at all?
Or did she file on April 20?
As noted, if your school has asked for a tax transcript, and your parent is required to file taxes…you will not receive any aid until your verification process is complete.
When did you receive notification about the verification? When did you file your FAFSA?
If your mom is able to file taxes she needs to do so asap. She can get assistance from the IRS/Social security administration of community based organizations for obtaining a tax ID number if she does not have one.
Are you sure that cancelling after one week of classes means you’ll owe money?
Are you living at home and commuting?
If you cannot file tax return by April 15 you can apply for a six months extension until October. But if you owe taxes you still need to pay what you owe. The 2015 year tax return is going to be used for the school year 2016/17 and 2017/18 FAFSA, so it’s very important that your mom files her tax return or you won’t get aid for those two years.
Your mom should go get help to file her 2015 tax return electronically immediately. Do you know if she will owe? If she might get a refund, the return might process sooner.
I applied on the 20th and received the verification notifcation on the 25th.
Of August? Why did you apply for aid SOOOOO late in the process?
The thing is you need a ssn to file electronically, at least that’s what I saw when I tried on 2 different websites. She does owe money.
Yeah they’re billing policy is if you don’t pay the tuition bill before school starts, i will be billed late fees and then they might cancel all of my classes, at least that’s what I understood.
And yeah I’m living at home and commuting.
To file what? Yes, you need a SSN to file the FAFSA electronically. But this could have been filed in January, or February…or March. When were you accepted to college?
How much aid do you need to have to attend?
Your issue is timing. If you are entitled to any portion of the Pell grant, you will receive it. And you can also take a $5500 Direct Loan. BUT neither of these will be available to you at all until the verification process is completed. It sounds like your fall bill will be due before this is resolved.
Contact your school financial aid office. Perhaps, they can give you some info,
My opinion…you might not get the money in time to pay the fall bill.
I wasn’t sure if I was applying for college yet because we were unable to pay out of pocket, but I gave It a shot anyways to see if we can receive finincial aid through some way of means. And also no one informed me that I can apply for fafsa before applying to college.
Did your mother fill out the FAFSA with you? Does she have a FSA ID? I assume she did if your FAFSA was processed and you are now just in the verification stage. If not, you’ll need to submit a hard copy FAFSA, and then she needs to provide the forms they require (taxes, copies of W2s, pay stubs). If she is not required to file a tax form, then she can provide a non-filer statement. if she is required to file and just didn’t, there won’t be a lot you can do except you’ll qualify for unsubsidized loans. For 2015, she can still file, up to Oct 15, without penalty. She would have to pay interest on any tax owed. The extension is automatic, no need to apply for it. She is not a day late, she still has time to file.
Filing is a prerequisite to getting a student loan. Yes, the student is hurt by the parents not filing taxes. There isn’t a way around it.
I was accepted the 19th. It’s a CC so I would need $2600 per semester, but I would recieve $5600 in financial aid according to my efc. I did already and they gave me an option, setup a payment plan and pay monthly and when I receive the financial aid, pay with that but, my mom does not have the 25% down payment at this moment. If that’s the case, no college for me.
Check your school registrar website to see if it shows something like 100% tuition refund if all classes dropped by the end of the 2nd week of class.
Is this a community college? How much do you owe? What were your ACT/GPA?
