Hi all,
So I just found out I got admitted to UCSD ( which is great because it is my #1 choice); however, I also found out that I need to submit a Dependent verification form, my parent, and my tax transcripts in order to receive full financial aid…and the deadline is May 1, which is less than a week!!!The IRS requires me to wait like 10days in order to get all the transcripts… by then I already missed the school’s deadline. Today is Saturday so I can’t call school office or IRS office…and I just freak out rn…Can anybody give me any advice?? What should I do!!! and what are the consequences if I miss the deadline… ???
I am very appreciated!!!
Call the school first thing Monday morning.
I do have to ask…why is this happening at this late date? Are you a transfer student?
@thumper1 yes, i am a transfer student. I just got admitted yesterday and they required those papers by May 1…which is impossible…
When did you file your FAFSA? I gather it was recently and you were unable to use the IRS data retrieval tool.
Why is the school verifying these things? What is it about your FAFSA they are questioning?
@thumper1 I finished all the fafsa stuff since October last year. i dont know why i could’t use the IRS data retrieval tool, it just doesn’t appear on my fafsa page. They need my Dependence verification, my parent transcript and my verification for not filling 2015 tax. because in 2015, I made so little money so I didn’t file any tax form. Also my dad couldn’t claim me in his tax because i don’t live with him for more than half a year either ( IRS law states that in order for parent to claim their children in, the children must live with them for more than half a year )…
Ok…if you didn’t live with your dad…who DID you live with? Are your parents married?
- If you didn't work in 2015, you would be required to complete. Non-filers statement...and very likely that has been on your school financial aid website...all along for folks who don't file taxes.
- Are your parents U.S. citizens with SS numbers...who filed taxes in 2015? If so, you would, have been able to look their tax return to the data retrieval tool which WAS working in October. And most websites clearlymstqte that if you cannot use the DRT, they expect a tax transcript.
- What was your parent tax filing status?
- Did either or both if your parents work?
- You say your dad couldn't claim you on his return because you didn't reside with him more than half the year. This implies that your parents are NOT married. Are they?
- If your parents are NOT married, and you resided with your mom most of the year, your, dad's income and assets shouldn't have been on the fafsa at all.
On Monday, call the school and find out exactly what you need. Then see if you can get an appointment at IRS to get the documents. If your parent needs a transcript, she will have to go with you. The Dependent Verification must just be a form you fill out.
It is not impossible to get these documents by next week, but it also may be possible that you can get an extension for the docs you don’t have. Just stay on top of it.
@twoinanddone I have a question…can the local IRS office give me the Verification of non-filling letter? cause on the school website and also on IRS website they tell me to fill out the 4506-T form and mail it back to the main IRS office in order to have the verification.
You should,be able to get the form at an IRS office.
If I can get both of the parent’s transcript and the verification of non-filling letter then I should be fine… I hope that I can get both of it by next week… thank you guy guys
Getting the nonfilers statement might be the least of your concerns.
You mention your dad declaring you on his taxes when he shouldn’t have.
Are your parents divorced or separated? And if so…did you use yourmdad as the custodial parent…when he really wasn’t?
@thumper1 i mean he didn’t chaim me on his tax cause he couldn’t. they’re already divoced. what do you mean by I used my dad as the custodial parent?
If you didn’t live with your dad more than 50% of the time…did you include him on your FAFSA?
Or did you JUST include your mom’s income and assets?
Did you JUST use your mom’s info on the fafsa? Did,you live mostly with your mom?
[/quote]
I believe this is NOT true. The parent who provides the bulk of your support can claim you as a dependent on their tax return…regardless of where you live.
@BelknapPoint am I correct about this?
BUT for financial aid purposes…kids whose parents are divorced…can only list the parent with whom the lived more than 50% of the time (for, the year prior to the fafsa filing date) on the fafsa form.
Did you put your father on the fafsa form? Or your mom?
This is from the IRS: “a dependency exemption for a child may not be split between two or more taxpayers. Generally, the child is the qualifying child of the custodial parent. Generally, the custodial parent is the parent with whom the child lived for the longer period of time during the year.
However, the child will be treated as the qualifying child of the noncustodial parent if the special rule for children of divorced or separated parents (or parents who live apart) applies. See Publication 504, Divorced or Separated Individuals, for more information. This rule requires in part, that both of the following conditions are met:
The custodial parent signs a Form 8332, Release/Revocation of Release of Claim to Exemption for Child by Custodial Parent, or a substantially similar statement, and
The noncustodial parent attaches the Form 8332 or the statement to his or her return.”
@thumper1 i believe I can be independent on IRS file but I can’t on FAFSA…basically they’re separated things.I’m pretty sure about this cause I already asked my college and tax office. I have to include my dad on fafsa because he is the one who supported me financially.
overall, i am just wondering would anything happen if I miss the deadline of UCSD …
For,the FAFSA, you use the parent with whom you resided greater than 50% of the time for the year prior to the filing of your FAFSA?
Was that your dad? You have been saying NO…you did not live with him greater than 50% of the time.
If you lived with your mom…LIVED WITH YOUR MOM …greater than 50% of the time the you are required to use HER as your custodial parent on the fafsa. Your tax filing status has nothing to do,with this. Your dad could be giving you a million dollars,a year…and your mom NOTHING…but if you LIVE with your mom greater than 50% of the time…your MOM is the custodial parent for fafsa purposes.
@thumper1 I live alone so far LOL my dad and I are American citizen but my mom isn’t. so yeah… my situation is kinda complicated therefore I need the tax transcript thing LOL
You live alone…where? Oh I’m guessing at your CC college address.
If that is the case, you use the parent with whom you resided LAST. Who,was that?
All,the tax transcript, does is verify that person’s income, taxes, and dependents. It doesn’t tell, who should be your custodial parent for fafsa purposes.
