Unit Caps and not being able to graduate

So my bf has a bit of a situation. He is in the envi. science program at UCR, but it looks like he won't be able to make it in under the unit cap. Is there a way to not get totally screwed? He changed is majors after one quarter so he has a couple of classes he doesn't need but since it is a pretty high unit major, he didnt really have the room to take anything else.
Do they really deny you graduation for this? What would his options be a this point? Any info would be great.

PS he has an appt with an advisor tomorow, but I was just hoping for input. Thanks!

I wouldn’t stress too much. There are usually some ways around the rules. I’m positive they won’t deny him graduation. I bet there’s some sort of extension or petition he’ll have to fill out.

Okay thank you. I really couldn’t imagine the school flat out saying you can’t get a degree because you hit the limit. I don’t know, I guess anything is possible.
