Unit Requirements

I have a couple of questions about the unit requirements in L&S. Is there a maximum amount of units you can take before they make you graduate? I might take 18 units this semester in order to increase my class standing for better telebears appointment in the future. However, I am afraid that this is too much and worried that there might be a unit cap. As for the 36 upper division units, does Public Health 116 count as an upper div? And If I am planning to be an IB major, the units for Public Health 116 would also count towards the 6 upper div units that must be taken outside of my major, correct?

Anything that’s over 100 is an upper div, so your PH 116 will be counted.

There’s no upper restriction for units for graduation. The only bad thing is you can’t sign up for freshman or sophomore seminars. (which has upper limit of 30 and 60 units each, respectively)

So I can take as many units as I want and not have to graduate early? As for the 30 unit and 60 unit for seminars, are only units earned from ucb courses counted or do they include AP and community college units as well?

It includes all UCB courses and AP and Community College units. If you have too many of those, your first semester might be the last chance to take any seminar class. :(

There is a limit - “If you stay in college more than eight semesters, you may not continue beyond the semester in which you complete more than 130 units.” If you’re doing a double major, you get 136 units, I think.

[College Policies-Unit Guidelines](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/collegepolicies/unit.html)

As long as I graduate in 4 years, I can take as many units as I want then?

Subject to the unit limits of your college. for example, 20.5 for L&S (although it can be increased with the support of your advisor). Also, you are free to take more units each summer. Even without the permission to exceed 20.5, you get to about 185 units in eight semesters. Not counting CC or AP units.

One the page below, it says: “You may take more than 120 units as long as you graduate in no more than eight semesters (counting all the institutions you have attended).”
If I took classes at a CC for 2 summers, does that count towards that 8 semesters? I am a little confused on the “counting all the institutions you have attended” part. Is that geared towards transfers? Thanks.
[Degree Requirements-Unit Requirements](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirements/unit.html)

All units that have been put on your transcript - that are transferred for credit. If you took courses that are not accepted by Cal, they don’t count.

Also, units from AP credit are not counted towards that limit.

Sorry if I confused you but what I was trying to ask is whether or not the 2 summers at the CC would count towards the 8 semesters that they are talking about. I am asking this because they said “counting all of the institutions you attended” which makes me think that each of the summer at the CC is considered one semester. Is the 8 semesters just the 4 years I will spend at Berkeley?

Summer is not counted, only fall and spring

Thanks Rider for clearing up the confusion :D

I have a question about the capped major 80 units restriction. Do community college courses and AP units apply towards this 80 units or just Berkeley units?
