Just saw this thread and wanted to tell you that two years ago I had the chance of applying to a United World College but decided that it's better to stay at a high school in my country. it was a very BAD DECISION.
Now I see that UWC students really have "all doors open" when it comes to admission to american colleges and universities. Some schools (Brandeis or Richmond) even have scholarships for people who studied at UWC.

well atleats in singapore, the fee is bloody high compared to local sch and though the UWC std may be all rite, it cant compete with top singapore schs at all.... the only advantages i see are that IB is offered and the chances of gettin in gd US coll seem slightly bttr.... honestly many ppl here are discouraged cos of the fee...

Can't compete with local schools? Bring it on! ;)

do u really think u can compare with raffles and hwa chong junior college as well ar RI, RGS, Chinese High etc....

tho i wont mind seeing uwc being bttr than rj and hc jc (i am form vj, the 'rivals') :p

but seriously, the fee is lot lot more than for locals sch who provide a gd education....

I can't argue about the fee, except that as we expats aren't allowed into top local schools and you guys aren't allowed into UWC, it's a moot point. As to compare, well, compare how?

exapts not allowed?? hmm, thats weird... i am not a citizen or a pr yet i am in local schools for past 6yrs... i ahve frenz with similar status in uwc... and to get in top local school, well either u join a pri sch and do well in psle and O-level to go to top sec sch and jc.... there are some interbational students in these school and i dun mean the ones on singapore govt scholarships...

i was rejected by an UWC 2 yrs and i then went to a ordinary local highschool and tolerated the arrogance of UWCers I know for 2 yrs. now i've beaten 2 UWCers and won a full scholarship to Wesleyan. So. don't think theres anything so damn special abt UWCs shrug

Ok, I guess I should have been more precise: we are allowed into top schools, but the usual posting for expats is between 2 and 4 years, so while its not theoretically off limits, we don't have the time to go through the system properly. And of course, there are Singaporeans in UWC if they were born or raised outside of Singapore.

As to UWC itself - while academically it's quite good, it's more the emphasis they place on other stuff, like the arts and global concerns that sets it apart.

many other schools stress on arts and global concerns too
so cmon, gimme a break, im so sick of the UWC prestige crap

ok ok, lets keep it cool.... both local and uwc have their merits :)
and for prestige, i seriosuly dunno how itz viewed, in local schools, no one looks upto uwc :o

no offense cevonia to u, but it is kinda stereotyped tt atleast singapore uwc kids on general are seen as rich and oh well, not too nice....
i only noe abt 20 or so ppl and unfortunately i dun have a gd impression of them except say like four or five ppl.....

but i am sure u are nice person.... :)

Its true that most international school kids are rich and arrogant.......it is a generalization of course......I actually go to a international school (american school) so I guess I am one of them LOL.......but I can't ever think of going to local schools all they do is rote memorization, there is no creativity involved.....and there is no class participation or discussions that is why most singaporeans seem so narrow-minded.

who wants to learn singlish....anyways J/K lah......LOL

Don't the UWC offer scholarships for students who can't afford to pay? This should eliminate the "rich arrogant" stereotype shouldn't it?

As per the interviews, I assume they will be similar to college interviews with much focus on why do you want to attend a UWC, what you have done/plan to do to contribute to the global scene etc. They seem to look at not only what you have accomplished so far, but also place emphasis on your future potential.

It is true that several colleges in the US look favorably on UWC sutdents. Apart from the merits of having studied abroad, taken part in global, cultural, and community volunteer activities, the UWC Program seems to be heavily endowed and the program has scholarships for students and pays tuition for students who are attending participating schools. Wellesley school, for example takes part in the UWC Davis Scholarship Program as does Middlebury and Colby. This means that for any UWC student the school accepts who is in need of financial aid, the UWC Program pays for tuition, room and board and the full cost. Bottom line: several colleges benefit financially by accepting UWC students - the college itself does not have to give a grant to the student and they save quite a bit of money.

Does anyone know which of the UWC is strongest in it's science programs? Has anyone contacted or attended the UWC in Norway, London or the US?

I can see somebody are jealous of UWC students. Well, i know that it is SAD to be rejected by UWC. If you dun give a **** to UWC, y would u apply then. U mentioned that you have beaten 2 UWCers and won wesleyan full scholarship. Just to clarify that i am the other full wesleyan scholar student from Hong Kong, and I am from UWC. I know you get UCLA, so? I got duke, and my schoolmates got Harvard, Princeton those prestigious U. What bout ur ordinary local high school??? :) dun be angry, just wondering, not to insult you and your school. But see, if u dun give a **** to UWC, shut the fxxx up, because u r not qualified to be a UWCers, and dun use something like "wesleyan scholar" to scare us. We dun use university to measure how good a school is, but if u want to compete, i can give u some brief information. 90%of the ppl of my schoolmates, know nothing about wesleyan. 50% of my schoolmates, will only apply to the top 25 of US university. Sorry if I dun give a **** to ur local school's prestige.

^ Lmao!!!!!!!!!!

umm wallace you've gone too far. dont even wanna argue with sby as arrogant and unreasonable as you. if you so dont wanna go to wesleyan, then DONT, is anyone forcing you to? Go to Duke, thats your choice, its not like you have to accept a scholarship you so detest. if an UWC produces students like you, i'd rather go to an 'ordinary' local school. i go to a local school and im proud, becoz i speak english just as well as anyone else, i achieve just as high as you did, but the opportunities and resourses i receive are far less than what you got. but wait a minute, didn't you yourself go to a local school? and wes chose you becoz they thought they saw the potential in you of being a future leader, i wonder if you'd regret after seeing what you said.

and not to mention your msg at the wes thread has offended literally EVERY wes scholar. so that attitude is the tolerance and respect for diversity your school promotes? you havent insulted my school, you havnt even insulted me, i was talking abt what i thought but you've just insulted yourself. shame on you.

I've been doing some research on the United World College (looks interesting) and had a few questions about. Maybe someone here can help me.

What grade are most people in when they apply to the UWC? I read on the Canadian campus website that most people apply in gr. 11 and spend gr. 12 and an extra year at the UWC. However, on another country's website (think it was Wales) it said that most people apply in gr. 10 and spend gr. 11 and 12 there.

Also, are the students allowed to go off campus for personal activities? For example, I'm a competitive dancer. Would I be allowed to go off campus for dance class and competitions?

Just want to say something responding to Jurily's comment. I am a student from lpcuwc as well and I feel being offended by the label of "jerk". We never think that we are a better school, comparing to local schools like DBS or La salle. Just that we are proud of being UWC people, we can somehow change the world someday. We are not really sensitive to something like "UWC prestige crap." Wallace is right, we don't use how good the U offer is to measure how good a school or a student is. But if you want to compete with us with title like "beaten 2 UWC students in wesleyan scholarship", we are definitely not afraid. We do not mention it just that we don't think U offer is the measurement of the standard of the school, and it seems childish if you really want to compete. He said not many people in my school had heard of Wesleyan, that's true. I believe Wallace is not insulting Wesleyan Scholar, I know that he is quite happy to receive the offer and talk to us about it for whole day. I as well has a great respect to Freeman scholars. He is simply unhappy to see you challenging all the UWCers with the offer you have and the language you used in the previous post. You might know some people in the UWC are jerk, but labelling all the UWCers with the stereotypical view is simply incorrect. Yes, UWC is sometimes too idealistic to have such ideas of peace, justice and understanding, but at least we make a start, and not many people had done it, and this effort and courage should not be mocked!

'mocked'? i thought your fellow UWCer havnt just 'mocked' all of the local schools, he literally humiliated them. i was never talkin abt all UWCers, but this schoolmate of your has just presented himself as a live proof. i take back what i said abt jerk, but thats already the most offensive thing i said. what abt his 'shut the fxxk up'? and thats what you call 'effort and courage'? and showing off those ivy acceptance is trying to prove 'we don't use how good the U offer is to measure how good a school or a student is'? what i said abt beating 2 UWCers was true. one of you guys got it and it's also true. whats wrong of me to say sth so literally true? but what your fellow UWCer said, mocking my UCLA offer, thats what i'd call offensive.

^ this is the the most moronic arguement i've ever witnessed on CC

but im not complaining

flame people, flame, flame!!!
(this is what a six month vacation does to you)
