So, i'm thinking about applying for a UWC for 2010-2012 and I've got a few questions;

Overall, how do you feel about these colleges;
Adriatic [FIRST CHOICE!]
Hong Kong
Mehindra
Waterford
Pearson
Nordic

Is it harder to get into the Adriatic one without wanting to get in the music program?

How competitive is it for the Adriatic one? (Yeah, i'm a bit obsessed) I heard only 200 kids go there, what percentage would be coming from America? Would my interest in Italian up my chances any?

If i live outside the US but i'm a US citizen, should i apply through the American committee or the committee of the country i live in?

Do you think that going to a UWC will increase my chances of getting into a better university (i.e. GEORGETOWN! etc.)

By studying in a non-English speaking country for two years, but having all my classes taught in English, do you think i'll be able to master the language? I'm not really sure about this one because i've lived in Dubai for a year and i am in noooo way fluent in Arabic but then again, Dubai is a pretty international city and some of these UWC are in small towns.

I can’t really comment on any of the individual colleges you mentioned, but I can say that if I were to form an opinion of UWC as a whole, based on my experiences as a student at Atlantic College, I would recommend anyone considering attending a UWC to go for it. I had an incredible time at AC and as clich

Hey, therecordstore, I am very interested in applying to the UWCs also. It’s cool to see someone else out there! Nearly all of them sound amazing; my favorites at the moment are Mahindra, Waterford, Costa Rica, Mostar, and Nordic.

Actually, I’m not intrested in music… at all I hope that doesn’t lower my chances of getting in to that one. But i’d probably be happy with any UWC, if i get in that is :)

The number of applicants has been increasing, and I’ve heard that last year, there was ~400. They selected ~100 for interviews, and in the end, 50 people were admitted. They choose the 50 without regard to specific UWC preference, and afterwards decide on the placements. 25 go to Armand Hammer, 8 to Atlantic, and the rest are dispersed.

(btw, sorry, no official link. but I’ve done lots of researching and that forum I posted is a very reliable source.)

I’ve lived abroad in Hong Kong for one year and the UWC HK (which I actually lived very near) was highly regarded among the English-speaking schools of Hong Kong. I attended a English School Foundation IB International school while in Hong Kong and didn’t think much of the school, my mom heard wonderful things about the UWC from her local friends.

As for your college admission prospects… honestly, going to a UWC probably will only make it more difficult for you to gain admission into Georgetown. I believe only 12% of the population at Georgetown are from international countries. You’d have to be one hell of a standout student to gain admission accounting for all the other brilliant kids at UWC Adriatic who will also apply.

Just as going to Andover makes it more difficult to gain admission into Yale because you have to compete with your peers for the few select positions of admission.

It kind of sucks that only 50 students are accepted. I sent an inquiry to them just to make sure. Plus 25 of them are required to go the the UWC in New Mexico. [not that its a bad thing…]

I’m also an American citizen, but my application to prep schools was still counted as technically “International”. I don’t know if that will be your case, but that’s something you might want to look into. :)

heyythere, i wanna go to UWC really bad, everything about the experience excites me. But my extracuriculars are a bit weak and also my mom saysim tooimmature to go offon my own. I agree in someways because th ethought of not managing my time well and getting low grades scares me.But i really want to go to UWC,i believe it wld b good for me. Any advice? thanks

Hey! I can give my opinion on Pearson, since I live 30 minutes away. The campus is BEAUTIFUL, and also one of the more compacter ones. It takes about 3 minutes to walk anywhere on campus (unless you’re going to the observatory). The buildings let in SO MUCH light. It has a pool, ping pong table, and small gym. The theatre at Pearson is also really good, probably one of the best ones, and many shows and discussions are held there. Pearson has a very strong focus on both the arts and Marine Biology. For the arts, they stage a big show called One World in Victoria, the city closest to them and also where I live. It’s always a really great success and held in the Royal Theatre for several days and is always sold out. People come and share different dances, songs, poems, and stories. Because Pearson is located right on the water, they have their own dock with sailing boats and kayaks that you can take out anytime you want, as soon as you’ve had some lessons on them and such. I also know that none of the buildings on the campus are ever locked; resulting in the ability to study very very late if needed, but also to walk around campus at 3 in the morning and go into the art room, for example. This is different than for example the Atlantic campus, where there are alarms on the dorms past a certain time and you have to ask for permission to use the computer room later than 11:30. I know people generally make jokes about the island being really rainy and cold; this is not true. We do live in a temperate rain forest area, but it gets to around 25 in the summer and most years we don’t even have a lot of snow. This year we didn’t at all (Because we’re a tiny island with the rockies behind us). We even have some palm trees downtown! We’re a very well kept secret hahah. I know many of the teachers at Pearson and they are all WONDERFUL. I strongly encourage you to go the UWC in Canada, I can’t say a single thing about that I don’t like :)

Oh and I forgot to mention that the marine biology building is actually floating on the water!! They try to go out into the field as much as they can for the class and even go to race rocks, a marine reserve close to campus to study the sea lions there. It’s a very unique program and worth checking out!

I’m applying this year as well, and I think my top choice would be Norway or Adriatic. It would be Canada across the charts if I wasn’t living so close … not much would be new to me besides IB and the people. I want a chance of scenery as well!

Hey everyone here, just lemme know if MUWCI mails and lets us know even if we are not selected for the interview, they tell us, right? Do you know anything about it?
