Any thoughts from anyone here as to which would be a better choice for our son- He is interested in journalism- sports concentration. He originally was interested in broadcast journalism but has been thinking about switching to more of a strategic communication slant. Mizzou is known for their journalism but I have read Indiana has a great program also. IU also has a sports communication major ( with ties to the journalism school) and a sports management/marketing major ( ties to the Kelley Business School). These would both be a degree in the Kinesiology area. We are in IL so OOS for either school. Son is interested also in the Unv of Kansas but I really dont think it can compare to these 2 schools.

Run the numbers and figure out if any of these OOS places can be made affordable for your family. If they can, let him apply to both of them, as well as a few others that look like they can work. In April, he will be able to sit down and compare his results.

And of course by then he may well be interested in a different major entirely…

As a financial safety, consider NIU, which has a very good, though underrated, journalism program. I don’t know if they offer a concentration in sports journalism.

depends which campus he likes better. go visit them both and see how they are.

What is your budget? It’s unlikely that either of these schools would give much need-based aid.

Does he have the high stats for merit scholarships?

I would hesitate to spend too much for an OOS school. There is also a huge number of students pursuing this career goal, so getting employed (especially at a decent salary) could be an issue.

Mizzou is hands down the better J-School. The program is well respected in both news and sports. They have strong relationships to help with internship placement. Mizzou J-School compares well with Northeastern, USC and Columbia for a lot less money. Indiana’s program is good but not on the same level.

Mizzou has the better Journalism school, but IU is the better school overall.

So if he is certain – certain – that he wants to go to J School, Missouri is a better choice.

If he’s the type who takes up trumpet, then guitar, then sax, then drums (you get my drift) – and he might end up in heaven-knows-what major – then IU is the better choice.

Overall I would go with IU, since the future’s generally so ambiguous for 18-year-olds. And, if he does stick with Journalism, IU (while not MU) is strong there.

Thanks everyone for the help! He really likes Univ of Kansas while mom/dad really like Mizzou! We are going to IU in a few weeks. I would have added Kansas in the mix as a comparison but think I know what everyone would say! If anyone can say differently- please do! Need to start applying soon-- so frustrating! We also looked at U of I- Urbana and Bradley U- Peoria. He did not like the campus at Bradley His stats are this-

Ranked #9 out of 346 4.0 unweighted But low ACT - 22 which he is retaking Sep.

Math/science dragged him down. We are having him privately tutored for that- it was figured out that he was reading too fast and not understandiing what what being asked more than not knowing the material. After 1 session he raised his practice scores 3 points. Not looking for a miracle but think realistic for a 25-26 as we have had 4 sessions now and every practice test he has been getting 25-26. English he is getting 27-28.

Kansas he can get 9375 a yr with a 24 ACT and his GPA( based on J school major) . Missou he needs a 26 for 4K, dont know what he would get from IU because they dont post amounts. He is eligible for direct admit for J program for Missou & IU based on GPA and class rank. He is not a direct admit at KU unless his has an ACT min 24. So my thinking is KU is the farthest -8 hrs by car-, will be the cheapest but probably has the weakest program. If their business school was more regarded I would probably be OK with it but you can’t say that even.
BTW I was blown away by MIzzou campus-

Funny NIU was mentioned as a safety as it’s about 20 minutes west of our house. Lots of kids from around here have gone and it doesnt get alot of good reviews from kids close by. So son wont even consider it.

“Mizzou J-School compares well with Northeastern…”

NORTHWESTERN

We visited Mizzou as well last fall and were blown away…my daughter wants to study journalism as well…did you speak to them about their residency requirements. The admissions counselors there were quite upfront about cost of OOS and handed us the residency information. It was a little daunting for my daughter to be considering six hours away and then needing to stay a year to establish residency. She has a friend who established residency after his freshman year and now is on par with IU’s tuition (we live in Indiana).

Yes they did give us the info aboout establishing residency- which I found quite interesting- they were the first and only ones to do that! Mizzou OOS tuition for us is pretty close to what U of I (Urbana) is for us instate(IL). Its is about 6-6 1/2 hours for us also which is one of the few things I dont like about it! IU also being OOS for us is going to be lots higher thann MIzzou- just depends on if he gets offerred anything.

Daughter is a journalism student at Mizzou and loves it there. The J school is incredible and offers concentrations in so many different areas of journalism. She also loves the school in general and Columbia. She stayed there over the summer as did many of her friends and many of them established in-state residency, and so tuition is really reasonable. Son is starting at IU this fall, but he will be in the business school. I really like both schools overall, but feel like they each made the right choice for their particular interests and major. IU is substantially more expensive OOS even with some scholarship money and I don’t believe that establishing residency in Indiana is an option.

Thanks adamom for the comparison. I feel that either school would be a great choice with Mizzou being the better choice if he stays with Journalism and IU woud also be good for J scholl but if he switched to something wih more of a business slant- he would still be at a great school. We were surprised they talked about the residency
at Mizzou- it would help for sure. Wont know with IU what amounts they might offer.

He really likes Kansas- truly think he is feeling a little intimidated by Mizzou and cant seem to get it into his head that I think that Kansas is an OK school it just wont offer him the kind of education/opportinities he would get at the other 2. Oh well, in the meantime I guess we will just concentrate on his tutoring until the next ACT test .

Can someone elaborate on establishing residency for Mizzou? My D also wants to go into journalism (OOS, if possible) and Missou is a top choice but out of our price range.

My H is a KU alum and I have literally tons of friends who attended KU. I graduated from grad school there. Rock chalk! I also have friends who graduated from MU’s J school.
If he is sure about journalism, as much as it pains me, MU is the best of those three. For J school, kids look at Northwestern and then MU.
