So what are the possible, easier ways to get to and from Universal Studios and Disneyland from UCLA?

Disneyland is faaaaaar. Either the 405 then the 710 then the 5. Or the 10 to the 5 all the way down to Disneyland. The 5 is definitely worse (on average) than the 405, so I say avoid the 5 for as long as you can.

Universal- Can either just take Sunset all the way down to Cahuenga or can do the 405 to the 101. Traffic is crappy either way, but I would probably just use Sunset (depending on the time of day, though).

Either the 405 then the 710 then the 5.

You must be a SoCal native? I think NorCal people omit "the."

It makes no sense to just say 405 to 710 to 5. I don't know why you people do it.

Both places will take a very long time to get to due to traffic as Allie (genius!) said.

For Universal, I'd suggest using public transport to get there. I know that there's a Red Line stop at Universal City, and you can get on the Red Line at Vermont/Beverly, Vermont/SaMo, Vermont/Sunset as well as other stops (I'm not sure which is closer). There's probably Big Blue Bus lines to get to those intersections, or you can try MTA. Advantages? Faster, no parking, and more convenient. Disadvantages? You're taking public transit in LA...but that area shouldn't be TOO bad.

Disneyland? Good luck......

Public transit in LA is bad regardless of the neighborhood. Also, if you're going at night (or will be returning at night) and you have means to a car, just suck it up and use the car. Public transit at night in LA is even worse than during the day. It'd be a pretty long bus ride to the redline either way.

And yeah, public to Disneyland won't happen. I'd estimate that it takes anywhere from 40-70 minutes to get to Anaheim depending on how horrible the traffic is (my estimation is based on a normal day, not crazy accidents/spills/closures/whatever. that'd incread the time by A LOT). Probably anywhere from 25-40 minutes to Universal, just because the traffic sucks regardless of the route. Unless you took Sunset at night, which might make it faster.

And Emmeline- I'm an Orange County native. I know that most other places omit the "the" but we're all about it down here. I've never heard anything different in the area (It was so strange to me when I was in texas and everyone was all i-this and i-that).

/Sigh. I want to go to Disneyland. But not until after labor day.

WTH? People omit the "the's"?

I feel extremely uncomfortable not saying the. Haha.

Yeah most people think we're crazy for the "the"s. But it doesn't seem to sound right without them really.

The 405 to the 710 to the 5 is a horrifically long way to get to Disneyland. You're backing up nearly 20 miles on the 710, through the most heavily congested part of the 710 too (I drive this stretch to work everyday). My suggestion to get there from UCLA is to take the 405 South down to the 105 East (there usually isn't a ton of traffic on the 105), all they over til you hit the 605 South, then 91 East, and finally take the 5 South. Alright, that sounded really complicated but trust me, having driven these freeways all my life this will probably give you the quickest ride.

Public transportation to Anaheim, like Allie said, just doesn't happen. If you aren't too familiar with LA and Orange County, it is extremely spread out and built for freeways. Disneyland is over 40 miles from UCLA. There is no bus system that will extend that far, and we still haven't discovered the train in Los Angeles.

Universal Studios is a lot closer to UCLA but located with the most inconvienent routes to there. You'll either have to take the 405 to the 101 or go to the 10 all the way to the East LA interchange and skiddaddle back across Hollywood. Just so you know, the 405/101 interchange was found to be the worst in America and the East LA interchange isn't a whole lot better. I suppose you can take Sunset but traffic on the surface streets in Hollywood is bad at all hours too, even at night.

And I agree, the "the" is a vital part of the freeway nomenclature (I'm from Long Beach btw). It is a proper spacer between the freeway and the rest of the sentence. Without the "the", it creates run on collisions worse than your average LA traffic jam.

Heh. Whenever I go to Disneyland it's always from home (South County) so I always just take the 5 North. I was just guessing about what I would do if i had to get there from school. Mcgizzle knows best.

i'm from norcal and i say the "the".

All good Allie... I've never actually gone straight from UCLA to Disneyland, only from home to Disneyland. I can actually take the surface streets pretty quickly to Disneyland, from my house it's just a straight shot on Katella to the Magic Kingdom. I do enough driving in LA (and I've gotten lost a lot) so that I've mostly memorized the freeway system by now though haha. No matter how much you know though, LA driving sucks and there's not much you can do about it. I don't see why freshmen all want to bring their cars because it's such a hassle anyway. The traffic is bad and parking in Westwood might be even worse.

Fastest route during rush hour: Take Beverly Glen Blvd (about 2 mins away from UCLA) to the Valley (another 8 mins). Then east on Ventura and it ends right at Universal.

Haha, I love how everyone is talking about NorCal people dropping the "the". It may sound weird hearing us say "Take 101 north, then go..." but I can't even begin to tell you how weird it is to hear people say "Take the 101".

NorCal people have just realized before the rest of the world how much easier it is to not say "the". Sooner or later, you'll drop it too, and then it won't sound wrong to you anymore. ;)

How about the 405 to the 22 to the 57/5 for Disneyland?

That works, but it does require you to spend a long time on the 405, which is never a good idea for avoiding traffic.

Guys, lets face it. UCLA really is in a terrible location when it comes to trying to find a way to Disneyland or Universal. On the one hand, UCLA is in between the 405 and the 101 which isn't good. And, the only good way to get to Universal is maybe take 405 to 101 east really early in the morning.

just face it. the area around ucla is like the core for traffic. haha.

i tink most routes to disneyland would take the same amount of time
as long as you guys dont drive manual traffic isnt really that bad
its a pain in the ass holding down the clutch the whole time for us manual drivers... T.T

my preferred d-land route is 405 to the 10 to the 5.

universal, im guessing the easiest way is the 405 to the 101
