University apartments - thoughts and opinions for a grad student

I'm a grad student and I'm considering moving into the university apartments, probably a 1BR. The price seems good and the location doesn't seem bad (some are actually in downtown Austin it seems?).

Does anyone have any experience living there? Is it loud? I am a grad student and that tends to mean that I will have to wake up early for most of the week.

I hear it is a lot of families. I don't think I have an opinion about that one way or another unless it means that I may have to hear crying babies at all hours of the day. But really if that's the worst thing, I can definitely tolerate that.

The rent is $100 cheaper than some 1 bedrooms in Far West, although I know Far West is far more relaxed and grad student friendly.

One question I do have is they seem to have a guest occupancy limit. Listen, I don't plan on throwing parties or even really a lot of get-togethers, but how strict are they with this guest policy?

Is it similar to living in a dorm or is it really like living in an apartment building?

Any thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks!

Hmm, this may be a moot point as it seems it takes a very long time to get off the waitlist for these apartments?

I’ve been on the wait-list since summer 2011, but I’m waiting for a 2br. I started out at 250 and am still only at 130. I’m not sure if its the same for a 1br, if you know of any good apartment near campus let me know…

I live in the unversity apartments. Trust me There are very quite. For the guest don’t worry about it you can bring as many as you can no one will know. I live there and I love it :). Even the Electric are so cheap I pay for it 16, 18 , or 20 dollar each month.

Blueswise call them and let them know you were in the waiting list since summer 2011. My husband used to call them every week.

Thx Loreen i will definitely do that. What other utilities do you have to worry about there?
thanks

I live in calorado apartments. And I just pay for electric only. High speed Internet free. Free gas . free Water. Make sure when you call them give them a good reason why you want to move to the unversities apartments.

Thanks for the replies guys. I had no idea the waitlist was that long. I am praying that the waitlist for 1BR’s is shorter as if you have a 2BR, I hear that if your roommate moves out, you can still find someone to move in and keep the place. So maybe there is more of a fluctuation with 1BR’s!

I probably need to get one soon and if the waitlist is too long, I will probably just have to wait for next year to live there.

I don’t think any other place compares in terms of price and nearness to shuttle routes. Maybe Red River, but I’d imagine the rent is much higher there. I was thinking about Far West, but the prices have shot up there as well.

High speed Internet, gas, and water are NOT free.

If there is a cost to the landlord for high speed Internet, gas, and water, that cost is bundled into the lease and passed on to you. Otherwise, the landlord is losing money by providing the service and not recovering the cost.
