Is it competitive to get in? I know there is a essay to submit. How hard is it to get your first choice (Public Health/Why Aren’t We Dead?). When are most applications submitted?

My D was in UC this year. Based on anecdotal evidence, I would say it isn’t that competitive to get in, but that a lot of people don’t necessarily get their first choice. The earlier you submit the application, the better. My D did get her first choice (theater,) but several people on her hall were not in their first or even second choice. I’m sure some seminars are much more popular than others and probably fill up faster, but I’m not sure which ones. In her case, there were 3 different seminars living on her hall (I think that is standard) and she really enjoyed getting to know the kids from all the groups. I think it is a great program!

I agree with KellLJJ1. My D really enjoyed her UC, but she picked one that was not as popular this year. The kids who did not get the ones they wanted, or who did not get in at all, picked topics that likely had more students interested in them. I don’t know if the popularity of certain topics vary from year to year, but my guess is that the ones related to international studies and those related to politics would have a lot of students apply.

How do the year long seminars work? I assume they are 4 credits per semester but do they count as two gen ed classes?

D had a year long seminar - it only counts for one gen ed. 2nd semester was independent research - and only 1 credit. It was the first year that they offered the year long option, so things may have changed.

So is it better to do for the full year, or just 1 semester?
