University of Alabama or LSU

Hi Ive recently been very interested in these two schools and I would like to know how they match up.
-Which has better amenities
-A nicer campus
-Better college town
-More to do on and off campus
-Better business school
-Better greek life/houses
-Better overall athletics
-Do instate people leave on the weekends? (I’m out of state)

thank you so much

Alabama will have a better college town with more to do on and off campus, and a less commuter population (50% students come from OOS and its honors college is nationally famous so it attracts people from all over). Overall academics are stronger, too, but it’d depend on majors.
Are you a junior?
If so, you should apply to both… and a couple others.
Have you run the NPC to see if they’re affordable?
What’s in-state for you?

Hi thank you for the very helpful response. Money is no concern for me and I live in NJ and am looking for something big and warm down South. I do plan to apply to both and i’ve also had some small intrest in Auburn and Ole Miss. I feel that I’m leaning towards Alabama but LSU had a very beautiful new Business building (which I plan to major in) but that probably doesn’t reflect the education quality they offer. LSU is also right around the corner from my sisters college who is at Tulane and that makes it easier for my parents, but thats no big deal plus we only overlap 2 years. Thank you for the help

Hi Ive recently been very interested in these two schools and I would like to know how they match up.

-Which has better amenities (What type of amenities do you mean? Student rec center? what?)

-A nicer campus <<<== Hands down Bama. LSU is not well taken care of…AT ALL. Bama prides itself on having a gorgeous campus that is impeccably kept up.

-Better college town <<== Tuscaloosa IS THE college town. It’s a good-sized city devoted to the Univ.

-More to do on and off campus <<== They both do

-Better business school <<== Alabama http://culverhouse.ua.edu (which area of business interests you?)

-Better greek life/houses <<== definitely Alabama

-Better overall athletics <<== Roll Tide!

-Do instate people leave on the weekends? (I’m out of state) <<== Since so many of Bama’s students are from OOS, most do NOT go home on weekends.

thank you so much

Better school colors? Bama, of course… (no one looks good in purple and gold.) Crimson looks good on everyone!

Have you visited?

Since money is no object and given your parameters, have you considered the University of Miami? It matches up quite well with your list of desirable features.

For Amenities I would like to know how nice the dorms, classrooms, librarys, resturants, and student centers are.

Also which has better off campus housing
Thank youu

Alabama is known for its very nice dorms. I have only seen one of LSUs housing, so I can’t comment much about those.

Alabama just completely remodeled and expanded its student center, built another rec center, and there are many, many restaurants around.

Alabama has 7 beautiful and well-maintained libraries (including the law library and health sciences library). http://www.lib.ua.edu

The two that probably interest you the most are: Gorgas Library (which is very nice, but is also being enlarged), and Bruno Business Library.

LSU does not have great dorms overall. Tons of new student apartments off campus though. Still more under construction. There are a lot of really nice off campus options.

LSU teams have more national championships across all sports than any other SEC school. Both are big football schools obviously and Bama has a better record lately. LSU baseball is also excellent and leads the nation in attendance I think. Visiting teams are often amazed at the crowds because their schools have nothing like it. Several national championships in baseball, and they’re still in it for this year. Men’s golf just won a national title. Women’s gymnastics and softball both had good seasons this year.

As far as sports in general I’m honestly not sure one has an obvious edge. Both will have the big football experience as well as strong teams in a number of other sports. And if you want to atend games in person, lots of other sports will give yiu more opportunity than football which typically has 6 home games and tickets may be hard to come by.

Where is Slippy when you need him?

lol…even Slippy admits that Bama has the better looking campus, and better kept-up buildings.

Er…Tulane is in New Orleans, which by no means is around the block from LSU and Baton Rouge. That’s like saying Buffalo and Manhattan are down the road from one another. Or San Diego and Sacramento.

FYI. Louisiana’s budget crisis has LSU preparing to declare academic bankruptcy.

No, it’s not like either of those. “Around the corner” isn’t accurate but it’s not nearly as far as Sacramento to San Diego. It’s about 90 minutes. Certainly close enough that the parents could easily visit both kids on one trip. If my kids were halfway across the country it would certainly be easier on me if they were within a couple of hours of each other.

How big a factor that is will vary, of course. It certainly would not be a huge factor in our family but it might be something to consider. Being within a couple of hours would make it easy for the siblings to see each other as well which some might see as a plus.

The distance from my sister is not the biggest deal in the world… How will academic bankruptcy affect LSU/affect any college

Yes, academic/financial bakruptcy is a bigger deal. (Beside LA, I’m kind of worried about Kansas and, to a certain extent, WI.) I’d stay away until you know for sure what’s what.
Perhaps look into Ole Miss, Mississippi State, OU, Texas State, Texas Tech?

Dont forget Clemson, U of Georgia, U of South Carolina and Wake Forest.

I don’t think the academic bankruptcy is going to happen. Legislative session ends ths week. Vetos and override sessions are a possibility. Lots of political chicken being payed right now. In a few weeks the budget issues will be clearer. Things are tight but probably not as bad as was feared.

And on that note I will stop before I get political.
