University of Bristol or University of Melbourne?

Hi,

I have received the offers from Univeristy of Bristol (UK) and Univeristy of Melbourne (Australia) for Master of Education. Can anyone tell me which university is more well known in the world ranking? Which one should I choose and why? Please kindly advise.

Thank you !

bristol, for sure, in terms of academic reputation. if you wanna consider other things as well, Aus has really really nice weather and natural resources, which mean you have a whole lota things to do in your free time. i presonally dont like the gloomy UK weather. but its just me.

I want to know in term of international reputation. I know Bristol ranking no. 7 in Uk and Melbourne ranking no. 2 in Australia. But what about how do people ranking them internationally. Just want to make sure that I am selecting the best university to study according to my offers.

I don't not much care about the country condition. The international reputation is the main point for me to make my final decision.

If you could give me more advice regarding to this point, please do.

Thanks again for your advice.

which country are you from? in hong kong (thats where im from), ppl regard unis in Aus as the second tier intl unis since they tend to be less selective in admitting intl students, so most HK students only go to Aus when they dont get a gd offer from HK unis. UK's a completely different matter, not in terms of education quality but merely reputation. its the same when you compare Canadian unis with US unis - UT, for instance, is only up there with the 15th-25th US unis in terms of reputation, even though its among the best in canada. no doubt melbourne is a gd school, but bristol is for sure more internationally prestgious.

btw dont bother to look at the intl rankings some mags or unis produce... they're even crappier than the USnews rankings

i would definitely go to Bristol...better international rep. and in my opinion I way better academic institution... although one plus of the university of Melbourne is that you will have one hell of a social life!..

Thanks for your advice. :) It helps me a lot.

http://www.thes.co.uk/ ( please go to the world university ranking part)

In here, as I remember, Melbourne U ranking 22 while Bistol U ranking 60 something. After seeing this chart, I made me hesitating in making my final decision.

Are you from Uk? What do you think about the comment of this world University ranking? How do the British people comment about this ranking too?

yes I am from the UK... most ppl over here do not do not concern themselves with the world university rankings... instead they look more at national rankings by which Bristol is regarded as an extremely prestigious university. As a previous poster had stated Australian universities are not looked upon that highly.... especially within Europe

i would say the ranking is kinda crappy. there's NO WAY Upenn is rankedlower UCSD n UCLA. UCL is definitely better, academically and in terms of intl reputation, than Monash in Aus. and HKU higher than Duke? this is a joke. forget abt the chart.

yeah completly agree with jurily... those rankings are a bunch of crap... don't take them too seriously

Hi jurily and rage666,

Thank you so much for your advice. I am glad to hear that Bristol is regarded as an extremely prestigious university in UK from you. Honestly, for the course design, I like Bistol more. Just I need to play attention to the international reputation when I select the university.

Thanks again.

yeah np.. glad to have helped

yeah no worries :)

:) Thanks!

Some of those ranks are just weird. The top 500 that came out last year by some Shanghai based organization had LSE as one of the lowest!!!! My own university University college Dublin came out with a low ranking while another university that i attended before that was far inferior got a better ranking.

I agreed so. But I see some of the Universities quote this ranking as a reference. That is why I have to ask this question in here.

hey, i’ve applied to University of Bristol, and my application was sent in ABSURDLY early, but they still havent responded. I need them to get back to me so i can confirm another school i got accepted to through UCAS, but in the absence of their reply i cant even tell University of Edinburgh whether or not i want to go :frowning: How long do you think it will take? Its been…almost 5 whole months now, because my application was confirmed in early SEPTEMBER.
