What are the top 3 community colleges?

I have a question regarding the UCB application...
I applied as an econ major, but they asked for prerequisites in economics. There is a section where they ask for Math 1A or Math16A.

"Calculus: can be satisfied either by college courses, as indicated below, or by an AP Math score - Math AB w/score of 3, 4, or 5, OR Math BC w/score of 3 or 4 = Math 1A; Math BC w/score of 5 = Math 1A & 1B.
Math 1A or Math16A (1st Sem Calculus)"

I got a score of 5 on my AP Calculus AB, so what exactly do I enter in for the section where they ask for my math prerequisite (math 1A or math16a):
1) Course Title, 2) Dept Name and Course Number 3) Quarter or Semester, 4)Units, 5) Grades Earned, 6)College or University where completed

Any tips anyone? Thanks again

i had a long, complicated series of problems that prevented me from taking 8 units in the winter intersession. even taking a full 19 unit semester in spring, i'll only have 59 transferable units by the end of spring. will i automatically be disqualified from all of the schools because of that, or just the more selective UCs? i might be able to pull 20 if absolutely necessary but i'm not sure i want to push it since i'm taking several difficult required courses already. also...should i put that i'm taking 20 in the spring with the update right now even if i'm not sure? will they get really mad if i say i'm going to take 20 and then don't?

I think De Anza and Santa Monica College are the top CCCs, no?

There are no TOP 3 community colleges.
First of all, how would you measure the "topness" of a community college?
Transfer rate? Number of students attending? Number of Faculties?

It's not like certain community colleges have toughter admission rate than the others.

I hear the name De Anza a lot. I think it is well regarded for preparing students for universities and has a good rep at placing them into competitive schools.

I have a quick question...I missed the deadlines for applying to Berkeley and UCLA, is there any way i can get in before waiting till this next November to apply for fall 2008?

i actually went by de anza college for the first time last night (lost on our way to a concert near by)

facilities are definitely nice.

and dhl although a CC can't really have a tough admissions rate compared to others...there are DEF factors that make one cc better than another.

1) course selection

2) number of sections offered...in order to provide flexibility in arranging a schedule

3) motivation of student body and age group (a cc full of stoners and idiots or people going for a 2 yr degree...is very dif from a school that is known to be a main destination for berkeley hopefuls, for example)

4) Professors. there is one cc i know of that has a lot of berkeley professors teach there part time....i'd guess a few CCs in LA have the same thing going with ucla professors

5) resources..some CCs get way more college visits and advisors coming by than others. some have special mentorship programs that can't be found everywhere.

Well UCLA's nursing program is still open for admission.

Besides that, everything is closed.

ok then, what do you think is the TOP 3?

And I'm not saying all cc's are equal. But I just don't think there are definite top 3 or top 10 cc's (like the national universities).

If memory serves me right, I think ucla admits people in the winter quarter-- that means you can apply this summer.

i know this is from 1999 and it only shows the amount of people transfering to UC but it gives an idea (i didnt want to spend more than 15 seconds looking this up so i picked the first link)...

is it safe to say that the UC's which are within closee geographic proximity to theses CC's tend to have higher transfer numbers? for example a school down south transfering to UCLA or USC or norcal to Berkeley?

One of my teachers (I'm at De Anza) said students who transfer from De Anza do better in their final two years than their counterparts, who have been at their university for all four years, do in their final two years. He didn't cite any specific study and he had a penchant for exaggeration, so I don't know if that is true. But I could see it being plausible since the majority of students transferring are not going to the top schools like Berkeley and LA. Also, De Anza has a lot of sharp international students, but that may be true for other community colleges too.

Also, I'm not so sure how helpful total number of transfers is in determining how to rank community colleges, since they come in various sizes (i.e. De Anza's 22,000 students to Vista's 3000 students). I think it comes down to what someone previously outlined: quality of peers, instructors and resources.

I would be interested in knowing if adcoms at private universities distinguish between different community colleges at all.

I agree with nuveen. The number really don't mean anything; it's all about the rate. Santa Monica has approx. 26k students whereas my school (College of the Canyons) only has around 15k students. If talking only numbers, SMC obviously has the advantage, but in terms of transfer rate the figure can change quite significantly.
