i got that too today... i dunno what that means. i guess it sorta is a hint that your in otherwise why would they send that to you? i mean whats the point of getting a bunch of ppl signed up for it only to find out they didn't even get into the school?

When I was in high school, I received a letter in the mail from UCLA many weeks before they actually announced decisions. It said:

"Your academic achievements have placed you among the outstanding applicants for the major of Computer Science and Engineering and, on behalf of HSSEAS, it gives me great pleasure to inform you that the Faculty of HSSEAS has recommended your admission. [...] I am pleased to inform you that UCLA is able to guarantee you on-campus housing [...] Once again, I wish to congratulate you on your academic performance and I hope you will join the UCLA community."

Certain letters are clear indications that you've been accepted already. My initial reaction to the UCI message you posted was that it is a similar situation. I could very well be wrong, but I would say that if a good number of people who applied to UCI did not receive the letter, then it's a good sign for you. Congrats.

--

Also, they provide an email address for the admissions counselor, Jennifer Silverman, in the message. Why not send her an email and ask about it?

--

In high school, I was accepted to UCD, UCI, UCSD, and UCLA for Computer Science / Engineering. However, I was rejected from Berkeley, and I chose to go to UCD. Now I'm looking to transfer to Berkeley (I'm in my second year at Davis).

why didnt you go to ucla?

^good question

cause LA sucks duh

colleges are always sending emails and mail that SOUNDS like you got in...your not in until they tell you...

maybe thats just to pump you up lol

Because I grew up in Davis and wanted to stay in town for a few more years so I wouldn't miss too much of my brother's childhood. He was 9 or 10 at the time.

Another reason is it put a good impression of the college in your mind, so when you DO get the admission, they were one of the first to extend their hand towards you.

to me sociology is a exciting and fun major, not difficultat all if you like to write

Yeah sociology is definitely interesting. But I wouldn't list it under the "stronger majors".

we need to work harder!

the usc thread has twice our posts..

Ya, but they had a 5 month head start.

Those cheaters!

what do you mean not consider sociology as one of the 'stronger' majors?????

what indicates strength?

One reason why people like Social Science majors so much:

-Not much math and science.

One reason why Economics is particularly popular among Social Science:

-Big Bucks :)

I first chose sociology because I want to go to law school, and since most colleges do not have a pre-law major it was recommended to me by several law professors that Sociology was a good undergraduate major. I am glad that I listned because it gets you ready for all the writing. I am actually very good at math as I work for the State as a tax auditor, however I want to major in something I actually enjoy going to class for. It might not be considered a strong major by some but there are some great minds out there like Cornel West who have made a difference w/ that major.
On a side note, how many of you guys received that invitation to the Berkeley leadership scholorship? Does everybody get that email?

congratulations! stats? :P

actually... better to see if other people got it (I didn't)

luvtolearn, is this the one you're talking about? (If it is, then I got it)

"Dear UC Berkeley applicant,

For over 70 years, Alumni Scholarships at UC Berkeley have awarded the very
finest student leaders from across the country. This year, we will give out
some $2 million in undergraduate scholarships to more than 800 students. You
are receiving this message because we want you to apply for one of our two
scholarship programs:"

sounds like in?

if we did get the alumni scholarship invitation, will it affect our admissions if we dont apply for it (I dont have time to write another essay). And yes, i know at the bottom it says it doesn't affect your applications. Anyone want to put more input on this, since we are trying to beat the USC thread! :-D

It says it doesn't reflect your application chances, but if it's not something they send to everyone who applied, that's kind of weird...

The least it probably does is tell you you're among the upper percentiles of applicants. It can't be random right?...
