University of California Transfer Students Fall 2007 OFFICIAL THREAD!!!

im a 3rd year

how many years do you guys think the majority of people who apply and are accepted to UCB, UCLA spend at community college?

2 years. And Berkeley DOES allow you to add economics. I don't know if you can "change" to economics, but you can add it, at least that's what I took from this:

Because of large enrollments and limited resources, it is necessary to restrict the number of students accepted into the major. Many factors are considered in determining admission. The main criterion is academic performance as measured by GPA in the prerequisite courses. The average GPA in prerequisite courses for students admitted to the major in recent years has been a 3.4. The economics major is impacted and to be considered for admission students should have a minimum of a 3.0 in the prerequisite courses. Students with a GPA of less than a 3.0 are typically not admitted.

Transfer students admitted to UC Berkeley Fall 2006 and later are required to enroll in missing prerequisites and apply to the major during their first semester at Cal. The unit cap does not apply to transfer students.

When transfer students apply to the major, does the department look at the grades from the community college?
YES. Grades in any prerequisite taken at a community college will be included in the calculation of the economics prerequisite GPA.

I think they may be referring to students that are "pre-econ" transfer students. They do not specify that a transfer student can add economics. The below comment from assist.org makes me believe my initial statement. I would call the school just to verify.

"Admission to Berkeley with the stated intent to major in Economics does not
guarantee acceptance into the major. A departmental application is required"

For all you potential Berkeley Econ Transfers, did you guys notice that the Stats requirement needs to have a pre-req of one year of calculus? Is anyone else but me realize that my Stats class doesn't satisfy that?

^Well, after discovering that little tidbit, I've pretty much lost hope for UCB. I applied for Econ and this is what I have for the pre-reqs:

Econ 1A - A
Econ 1B - A+
Calc 1A - A
Calc 1B - C+
Stats - Planned (took intro course, but haven't taken the course that has the pre-req of a year of calc)

That leaves me with a pre-req GPA of 3.575, which is too low.

My overall GPA is 3.849, but as time goes by, I get more mad at myself for that one C+. Every other class I took, I got at least an A- except for that one.

star I think the quote you posted makes it even more possible to add the major. If one completes the pre-req during their first semester at berk, and applies within the first 4 weeks, they have the same standing as everyone else. I may have to give ucb a call tomorrow...

relax guys

CCs don't even offer calc-based stats courses so they can't hold that against you

^true

you will be fine im kinda in the same boat and Im not worred about it.

hey all

i need to update ucb, ucla, and ucsd with my grades since i received a few incomplete marks spring quarter. do any of you guys know the contact information for each of the school? also do i just write a letter telling them about my updates?

thanks

Applied to: UCLA and CAL
Units: 62 at the end of this semester
UC GPA: 3.46
TAP: Certified!
Major: Business Economics/ Economics
IGETC: Done by the end of this semester
Essays: Weak :(

Major Prep
Microeconomics (Honors)- In Progress
Macroeconomics (Honors) - A
Calculus I - B
Calculus II (Honors) - In Progress
Financial Accounting - A
Reading and Composition ENGL 1A - A
Reading and Composition ENGL 1B- A

I called UCB and you can add economics as your major. You just have to complete the pre-reqs within your first quarter at berk :).

you mean first SEMESTER :P

Werd, good call ;)

I wonder if the same thing goes for Computer Science, since it is in the L&S Department

Check out their website. Go to CS page and check requirements. If you don't find anything definitive call them up :)

Bobbak,

I'm applying to L&S CS at Berkeley also, and they do not require 100% completion of prereqs for admission.

hm since for Econ at Berkeley we have to spent a semester and take one math class and one econ class before we can actually apply to the major, I wonder if it makes a difference if your major is Pre-Economics or some other random major. And does anyone know what it takes for a Pre-Economics major to be rejected by the Economics department? That would really suck.

hey all

thanks

Is it just me or a lot of you guys getting a whole bunch of emails from ucsd chancellors office? i think i've gotten about 4-5 emails from ucsd this week. It's spamming my email box lol.
