Why would UC want to admit a student who couldn’t even bother to get his/her application in on time? It doesn’t seem like this would be a source of high-yield applicants for the school.

So we do know that the Common App will update itself to the correct deadline, right? My dashboard is still reading 1/1 as the deadline, and the clock indicator is gone.

I’m terrified that means Common App will tell me that the deadline has passed when I try to submit my app (hopefully later today or, if not, early tomorrow).

I’m also soooo happy that we’re all in this together. (Cue High School Musical soundtrack.)

@YZamyatin: I see your point, but you can also think the other way: If these students spend their January 1 working on their UChicago app, that is only because they REALLY want to attend UChicago.

Quick question, and I’m sorry if this isn’t the place to ask. When referring to UChicago in an essay, is UChicago acceptable? I’ve been told to spell it out to University of Chicago or just plainly put Chicago. Any thoughts?

And whatever their reason is to extend the deadline, I’m thankful. Go UChicago!

Everyone who attended says the U of C, Chicago, or the University of Chicago. There is an effort being made by the school to change to UChicago. It’s not quite as drastic as the change from the Graduate School of Business or the GSB to “Booth”(?), but UChicago sounds exactly like what an outsider would call it.

i used uchicago in my essays and i got in EA…i think it’s okay romeonachos! good luck!

From the UChicago Admissions tumblr:

[UChicago College Admissions, Is it true that the deadline is extended to January 3? I thought I read that somewhere, but Common App still says Jan 1.](<a href=“UChicago College Admissions”>UChicago College Admissions)

“Yes! Our deadline has been extended to January 3. Although the Common App states our deadline is still January 1, the Common App will remain open until the 3rd, and applications submitted before the end of the day on the 3rd will be considered on time no need to worry!”

Thanks so much!

@romeonachos: I wonder how you can write your UChicago essays without even looking at the prompt. :)

“Please address with some specificity your own wishes and how they relate to UChicago.”

Guess what, UChicago is acceptable therefore.

The extended deadline absolutely saved me!

My essays were still rather meh but oh well. They at least happened.

now it says it’s due the 15th …swell. Wish I could go back and edit my essays which I turned in already, they weren’t my best and 12 days is a lot more time! They must have not gotten the number of applicants they wanted??

donno :)

Lots of people appreciate the extended deadlines.

But it does seem that U of C is trying to boost numbers.

I don’t know about that. Swarthmore, which has ED 2, extended its deadline to the 15th too, as did some other colleges. Amherst and Vassar extended their deadlines to the 8th/10th.

I don’t know about previous years, but I have a feeling that lots of unsolicited and maybe-not-that-brilliant emails(remember, Twelve Reasons to…?) scared people away this year, and hit hard UChicago’s reputation of stand-apart-from-the-crowd, “life of the mind” school.

Yes, it’s terribly obvious that they’ll trying to boost their numbers. On the other hand, it’s somewhat justified that Chicago has finally set a later deadline, as its essays require much more time than those of virtually every other elite school.

No, my point was that there genuinely seems to be a problem. Swarthmore would probably be the last school that wants to boost its numbers. A friend works at the admissions office at Swat, and she told me that they added an additional supp essay this year just to discourage frivolous applications.

Or maybe that supplemental essay overdid it and discouraged too many applicants, and now Swat’s trying to boost its numbers.

Am I the only one feeling angry about the extended deadline?

I chose to cross out several colleges (which also had deadline Jan 1) from my list so that I would have more time to work on my UChicago application. I treated UChicago as “top priority” and worked hard to get my application done on time, and now they simply give “a couple” extra days? It seems to me that the extended deadline hurts students who want an UChicago acceptance letter bad enough to work hard and get everything done on time.

Also, I cannot believe I didn’t even receive an email warning such extension. I only found out that the deadline was extended because I follow their tumblr (but I had already submitted my application by that time). It could at least have been better communicated…

I absolutely love UChicago, but I honestly am very disappointed… Extending the deadline does not meet the image of “rigorous university” UChicago has.

@brbrbr, I finished proofing my UChicago essay at 11:50 on January 1st, and it was the best essay I think I’ve ever written. (extended). Although UChicago is one of my top choices, I’m not bitter about them extending their deadline… I applied to 25 schools (I think; I’m a bit hazy with the numbers), and I decided I was applying to more than just my public flagship on December 2nd. So, I had a month to write a good 40 essays. Over winter break, I sacrificed time with my family and shut myself in various coffee shops and libraries for ~15 hours a day (I made a schedule–8-12 work, 12-1 eat, 1-3 work, 3-4 walk around/break, 5-9 work, 9pm-1am research/do schoolwork/read) to work on my applications. After I followed my schedule, I finished my essays (due Jan 1st) with a day to spare, and spent the last day proofreading. I knew UChicago was “loosey-goosey” towards deadlines from my research (UChicago said that if the app is due in any time zone in the world, you can submit it, etc.) and was hoping for more time to proofread, but frankly didn’t care whether or not they extended.

Now, after all of that rambling, I’ll get to the point: it’s not really useful to criticize UChicago on the basis that you crossed other schools off your list for them, as it wasn’t exactly necessary to cross other schools off your list; if you wanted to apply to all of those schools, you could’ve still made time to write the essays. Keep in mind, I don’t mean to come across in an unkind way :p

Vctory: Remarkable! Best of luck to you.

Vctory: “25 essays”

really? why 25?

I would really like to know what benefit there is to applying to so many universities.
