@caspiancat

Which freshman dorm would you suggest. My daughter isn’t too keen on bathroom sharing or the bathroom being down the hall…

@gatormom18
I’m honestly not sure with the bathroom issue. Some people seem to like Beatty Towers because they are Suite style, but the towers also appear outdated. Honestly, if my daughter goes to UF I am going to suggest the Murphree area or Hume to her. Murphree dorms often only have about 6-8 people sharing a bathroom on their small floor. My son’s placement had females on floors 1 and 3 and males in floors 2 and 4. Also my son had a sink in his room in Murphree, which made a big difference. He did not have a sink in Rawlings. He could see a great view of the stadium out his window at Murphree ( there were multiple windows in that dorm) and I thought the location was ideal. The parking is also better and if you get lucky you can get a spot right outside the door of your dorm there ( with the right decal, which freshman probably don’t have) Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see other areas, but my son said the Murphree Area is generally highly regarded. I think the larger more connected dorms might offer a better chance at socialization though, although that wasn’t true for my son. He connected through clubs and most of his friend group was in Hume or other dorms. Sorry I can’t help more. It’s very difficult to find out detailed information about the residence halls, although the videos online are somewhat helpful. Let me know if I can offer any more help.

For Murphree sharing bathroom are there multiple stalls and toilets so not shut out when someone in there? I think technically Beatty is considered apartment style because of the kitchen area.

anyone find a handy list of which halls refurbished when to get a feel for differences?

When making selections do you select the hall and the combo you want? Say you’d want Murphee but only as a double bedroom, would prefer to go to second choice over getting a triple?

Question on turning in your housing deposit - my S was admitted and he is OOS but waiting for other admissions that won’t come until end of March. What to do? Do we just lose the $$deposit?

You would only lose part of the deposit if he doesn’t attend.

Why do people keep talking about Murphree area being the best when it’s basically all non freshman because non freshman pick dorms before freshman? Or am I wrong.

@GatormarriedNole I don’t know if Murphree is the “best”, especially for freshman (it’s not a social as other dorms). Still, as a freshman, you may be able to find a spot in Murhphree.

UF has recently reduced the number of incoming freshman, from 7,100+ to the 6,400 target, this year, which free’s up housing… Also, there is a lot of very nice, affordable off campus housing, which many students prefer.

Those that pick Murphree, likely like the location (which is great).

Does anyone know the level of truth behind students needing to take many classes online because of over-population and not enough classes?

@H0llyw00d Several lower division classes are online. Your major plays a big roll in how many you may take in your first year or two.

First, many of the classes recorded the lecture and make them available online. They will have one normal section (usually early in the morning) and then several that are online.

Some classes are online only.

Some classes are “flipped”, which is a popular option. With flipped classes, the lectures are online, and the in-class sessions are for questions only. It’s a much more effective use of the professors time (working with students) and the students like the option of watching the lecture at their convenience.

Both of my kids are in engineering, and they took 1 or 2 online classes (one being a required engineering professional writing class) in their first year.

Few upper division classes are online only. I do expect “flipped” classes to become more prevalent.

Thank you so much @Gator88NE. This is so helpful.

Has anyone heard anything about merit awards?

@HollyW00d admission merit awards were emailed out about 2 weeks ago.

@Mom2NND Thank you!
