My D is still in high school and we are getting an early start looking into MT programs. Other than the usual from the "Big List". U of F is closer to home, but few postings and I don't think any threads about their program. I would like to hear from those that attend and why U of F over other MT schools. I would also be interested in those that applied got accepted but chose not to attend U of F and why. And for those that did not even give a darn about applying at all. Comparisons to other programs would be most appreciative. Thank you in advance.

Admittedly, we never even considered the UF program. Take this commentary with a grain of salt, but also think that few people we know consider UF either. It may have a wonderful program but I honestly have little to say about the program other than UF is acknowlegded to be a great school academically and perhaps is the most sought after school in florida for that reputation. I CAN however tell you much about FSU's MT program! MY daughter and I visited several times and she auditioned there and received an invitation to attend. We came within the slightest of degrees of sending our girl there, until University of Michigan came through with an invite as well, and even THEN, it was a hard choice. FSU is incredible! Amazing kids, amazing faculty and a nurturing and professional vibe emanates there. If you are steadfast in a florida school, FSU HAS to be the top of your list for musical theatre. Perhaps the top of a short list.

FYI - There is some talk about U of Florida on the Florida State thread.

Thanks Kat for your input. I am sure I have read the FSU thread, but I have wondered why no one has ever started a thread for U of F. Like many of the Big List schools FSU has students and parents commenting on many topics. But there is not a separate thread for U of F. It would be helpful to go to one particular thread to read up on just that program, all the other programs have it....just a thought.

And yes, Broadwaypirate, I have read how great FSU is and of course that is the #1 choice. But, they only chose 4 people this year and the acceptance is always very low. Gainseville is close to home, and I wonder why I don't read more about U of F on these threads, I am thinking it is because it may not be note worthy. Giving the school the benefit of the doubt, I am hoping to get more information because I have requested it. So far I am getting referred back to FSU. Hence, this is the purpose of this thread...

I WOULD LIKE INFORMATION PRO'S AND CON'S ON U OF F PLEASE.

Mom at home,

I'll have to ask FSU's Director of Student Services for the School of Theatre (she posts here at CC as All4FSU), but I'm pretty sure that FSU offered admission to 12 students this year. I can think of more than 4 kids who posted on CC this year who were offered admission to FSU! It is true that FSU never accepts more than 12. Class sizes are kept small in keeping with the department's philosophy of giving each MT lots of individual attention.

I agree with you that it is handy to be able to go to a dedicated thread to read about a particular school. The moderators for the MT forum decide which schools get a dedicated thread based on how much discussion their MT programs have received. UF seems to rarely get a mention; that is why the moderators have not given the school a thread. It really is not true that EVERY other program has a thread. A quick glance at the Big List would make it obvious that that is not true.

I wish I could help you with information about UF's MT program, but I really don't know anything about it. I suspect that the reason that you are not getting much response to your question is that the people who happen to currently be reading here are not familiar with the program. From what I have been able to gather through looking at UF's website, the MT program is run through the New World School of the Arts. New World has a H.S. program as well as a college program. You've probably seen the same information as I.

The Florida schools that seem to be discussed most often at CC are FSU, Miami, and the U. of Central FLorida. I'm sure it will be a financial boon if your child can attend college in-state. However, given the low acceptance rate at all auditioned MT programs, it is safest to spread a wider net.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help regarding UF.

Well, now University of Florida has its own thread....this thread. Lots of schools have a thread, but just not a sub forum. The sub forums listed at the top of the Musical Theater Forum are an orgnanizational tool to file existing threads on specific schools and put them all in one place. When there have been a few threads on a school, it has been possible to create sub forums to keep them all together. I have requested to add a few more sub forums that have threads and discussion on particular schools.

However, the list of sub forums at the top of the MT Forum is NOT a comprehensive list of MT colleges. It is NOT meant to be a "best programs" or "recommended programs" or "most well known programs" list. The BIG LIST (find through the FAQ link) lists many more MT schools/programs, such as University of Florida.

I hope you will get some responses. But one reason you may not be getting many yet is that I don't think any of our regular members attend this program and also I believe this program only accepts four students per year (by the way, I think you may be confusing the numbers with FSU which takes more than four per year). With such a small program, there are fewer people who can talk about it here, and those who attend or who have children who attend may not be on CC. I have not read of too many CCers who have auditioned there either. Thus, there are less people on CC who know this school first hand. I would imagine, since you live in Florida, you might have more access to theater students who have applied to UF.

There is one CC member, from Florida, whose daughter auditioned at UF last year. While not accepted to the BFA program in MT, she chose to attend UF and do a BA in Theater. I don't know if her father still reads this forum as he hasn't posted in a while, but you could try to PM or email him as they are quite familiar with the program at UF. That poster's name is Scogor. Good luck.

Thank you CollegeMom. Your post makes a lot of sense. Most likely the CCers are not UFers and the attendees or parents of are UF are not on this Forum. I am sure I am not the statastician re: numbers of excepted vs. wait listed. I thought I read somewhere that only 4 got into FSU. I knew as soon as I wrote it, someone on this Forum would correct me. I have found there to be many "perfectionist" on these threads. I hope I am a big girl and can accept constructive comments.

You know I don't know a single person that has even applied to UF, this is a mystery. Even in our theater circles, most talk of CCM. My daughter loves the Gators, but the MT school sounds "iffy". I was hoping I could get many responses singing their praises. But, I only get rationals as to why there is none.

I will take your advice an look up Scogor. Your comments are always appreciated and delivered in a kind and helpful manner. Thank you again.

Here is a link to a thread about UF on which Scogor wrote a little bit of information this past fall when his D was a freshman at UF in the BA Theater program:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=91184

Thank you soozievt. I never saw that thread and it was very informative. I will definetly contact Scogor. Sounds like maybe his daughter has gone thru the choices of UF vs. any other program. Interesting in that thread was a link showing the acceptance at UF for academics, SAT'S and other accomplishments. Link to follow:

mom at home:

My suggestion would be to call or e-mail the director of the MT program at UF and ask her if she can put you in touch with some current students so you obtain the student perspective. I know I have done this many times for prospective students who are trying to determine whether one of the programs in my department is a good fit.

As for FSU, we did indeed accept twelve students for the MT program this year and we expect our freshman class to be eight students.

Best of luck!
Michele

mom at home - I didn't go back to read the other thread, but if I remember correctly, I thought that UF didn't really have their "own" MT program until just recently (the past few years?) Maybe that's one reason not many people know about it or post about it. Good luck!

Mom at home,

I hope you did not feel that I was criticizing you when I corrected your statement that only 4 students were accepted into FSU's MT program this year. The reason I responded to that statement is that I do not want prospective students or their parents to write off FSU thinking that there is virtually no hope of their being accepted. Since my daughter joined the MT program at FSU in the fall of 2004, I've read several comments on CC and another theatre discussion forum indicating that FSU frequently chooses to admit almost no new freshmen. I think that those statements are very discouraging. I don't think that I am being a perfectionist in trying to clear up the misconception that FSU admits only 4 freshmen. I think there's quite a bit of difference between admitting 4 students and admitting 12 :)!

I do hope that you will e-mail Scogor. His D just finished her freshman year in UF's BA theatre program with a minor in dance. She was not accepted into any of her BFA choices, so she decided to attend UF where, I believe, she was offered an academic scholarship. She is a Florida resident. Scogor told me a year ago that he was not sure if his D would continue to pursue MT, but he felt that if she did, she'd have "more than enough educational and performance opportunities in Gainesville." I hope she is doing well.

I do not know whether or not Scogor is still reading CC. I'd suggest sending him an e-mail rather than a Private Message. If you do not know how to locate his e-mail address, just yell. I, or one of the other posters, will explain how to do it.
