I am unsure if I will be dorming at UIC. But if I do, I want the opportunity to pick the best one. I have visited the campus once. Does anybody know what is the best housing/ dorming facility at UIC?
In terms of :
-safety
-hygiene
-facilities provided
-co ed/ not co ed

Any help whatsoever would be really help b/c I really have no idea.

Most of UIC dorms are fairly new or have been recently remodeled. There are three clusters of dorms: west campus, east campus and south campus.
The west campus have the oldest dorms. They are located at about Polk and Wolcott. They are across the street from Cook County Hospital and the West side VA. You will regularly hear ambulance sirens wailing. It’ll take about a 5-10 minute bus ride or about a 15 minute walk to get to the east campus. There are three dorms: SSR, SRH, and PSR. SRH and PSR were built in the 1950s/60s and SSR was built in the late 1970s. SRH is a traditional dorm. All except one floor is co-ed. It was remodeled in about 2006. It looks nice. PSR was remodeled in 2003. It is a cluster style dorm. Each cluster is single sex. SSR is for older undergrads and professional/grad students. It is apartment style. It has seen better days. They want to remodel it but are short on money and will have issues placing students during the remodeling because it has the largest full year population. You can walk into Student Center West directly from the dorms. There is a gym in the complex. If you are a west campus student, the location of these dorms are excellent.
There are the four east campus dorms: Commons South (CMS), Commons North (CMN), Courtyard (CTY), and Commons West (CMW). CMW and CMS are traditional style dorms. Most of CMS is single sex while most of CMW is co-ed. CMN and CTY are cluster style. CMS is almost all freshman. CMW and CTY tend to have more of mix. CMN requires residents to be at least 20 and all the rooms are singles. CTY has the highest crime rate/property damage of any of the dorms. All of the dorms were built in the mid-1980s through the early 90s. Some of the rooms are oddly shaped. These dorms are connected to Student Center East. The gym is located across Halsted. It was constructed in 2005. it is convenient to the East campus, Greektown and University Village. Some of the Honors floors are located in CMW.
The newest dorms are the South Campus dorms: James Stukel Towers (JST), Thomas Beckham Hall (TBH), and Marie Robinson Hall (MRH). The South campus is where the old Maxwell st area was located. It has been yuppified and has a lot of shopping. JST is a cluster style dorm while TBH and MRH are apartment style. TBH and MRH do not allow freshmen.
UIC does have escort service available at any time. The Red Car will take you from any point on campus to another point within an area starting at 11pm. Laundry is included, but cable/internet are an extra charge. All the dorms are wired for wireless internet.
In general, the female bathrooms are cleaner than the male ones. In the traditional dorms, they are cleaned daily. In the apartments, you are responsible for them. Only SSR has bathtubs.
Whatever you do, do not grieve the cleaning staff. I have heard of stories of them refusing to clean certain floors because of their behavior.
Each dorm cluster or dorm has a 24 hour computer lab.
The best dorm for you is truly an individual decision.

There are also two independent dorms in the UIC area.
