Pros and cons of each one for freshmen? I'm flipping through the book for housing now, and I'm liking Broadview a lot, Burton-Judson, Snell-Hitchcock, and Max Palevsky too. Which ones are the best, in your opinion, and why?

^Good Question, bump.

Pierce! Woop, woop!

Haha, but if you want a more detailed analysis of the dorms I’d suggest looking here:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-chicago/432093-completely-unofficial-08-09-chicago-dorm-guide.html?highlight=dorms

There’s a good amount of conversation there concerning the dorms.

Good luck finding a dorm that you think will be best, but do realize that the Housing office has the last say! :)

I’m hoping someone can give a nice summary as well, but if you log into your UChicago account and go to the forums you should see a thread that discusses the pros/cons of some of the houses.

^ I had no idea there was a forum in the admitted students page. Thanks for the tip! :D

To the OP, I think it really comes down to what’s important to you. Do you cook frequently? Look at the availability of kitchens. Enjoy a tight-knit community? Check out the size and general opinions of current residents. Prefer a short walk to campus or a wonderful view? Choose between the closer and farther residence halls. Want single-sex floors or suites? Research into the housing options that offer this.

Other people can’t really say what the best place for you will be, but they can help you once you figure out what you want and what you’ll be willing to compromise. The UChicago 2013 group on Facebook has a “ask current students!” thread right now and I believe they touched on the stereotypes of who lives in which residence hall. It’ll probably be more insightful than what any CC’ers can offer you, considering we’re mostly prospies.

Does the new dorm have a name?

As of right now it’s known as “South Campus,” but I heard they’re waiting to name it after someone who donates (or has donated) a lot of money, or a professor that has made a significant impact on the University.

Windslicer, that’s a great thread there! From that, I’m really starting to like Max Palevsky more than Broadview now…but Pierce sounds really good too.

South Campus is inviting as well, since it IS kinda new.

My son is in Broadview. Really big room, single with private bath.
